Forums - General - Thinking about a new laptop, input would be appreciated.

 Heyo.

Unsuprisingly, this thread is about me wanting a new laptop and I have become so indecisive on the matter, that you forum dwellers are my last chance to make any sense of the last few hours i spent browsing online stores.

First off, i don't need a gaming mobile platform. I have my consoles and a very decent desktop, where i do most of my gaming. This laptop would be more for general study/work (in all honesty, mostly work than anything else).

My job requires that i manage quite a few databases that are pretty massive in size ( 10 Gb or more) and i need the power to handle that. I also have the unfortunate situation that i move around the country between company divisions and have to take into account that i might not always have the spare electricity outlet to feed my battery. So a battery that'll survive 2-3 hours under heavy load.

Now here is where you'll find the hard part of this thread. I don't want a big laptop. I don't want it. i hate it. I despise any mobile platform above 14 inch screens.

So yes...I need the impossible by 20th century standards, a laptop that's small (2 kilos or less would nice), efficient enough to take me to the moon and back and with a good battery.

I'm thinking Dell, but maybe you guys and gals(as if any exist here but pro forma...) have any better idea? ASUS, ACER? HP,SAMSUNG,SONY?

Anything?

Around the Network

Check out here: http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/s-series-home It seems to be quite good and Acer's seem to have some of the best battery life for Window's PC's. I own a MacBook Pro (which you would most likely not want since you seemed to dodge around Apple...) and it works really well with pricing being the only set back.

I deliberately left apple out of the equation because the prices of anything related to apple in Poland are astronomically marked up. And that goes double for any repair fees. I like macs, just not when i have to get my job done.

As for Acer Aspire, I like this one, especially the ssd/hdd combo part. The bad news is that it only sounds good in theory. The SSD drive is used for only some functions of the laptop and you can't actually access it. Another thing is that I have a high requirement for processing speed and ram amount, 4 gigs of RAM (based on what i can buy in Poland) would be cutting it pretty close for me.

Get anything that has I7 third generation and you are good to go, i7 is a godsend for work stuff, and you don't really need an Apple laptop to have one, there are lots of i7 Laptops that are half or oven third of the price of a single Apple Laptop.

Actually i was looking at the Dell XPS 14 z model and it seems to have everything that i was thinking about. Even the price isn't so bad, around $1500.

Although i do wonder if there's something like it but a bit cheaper.
