Nintendo has seperate "parties" that develop for them. They're all considered to be Nintendo but they have a little bit of a different name. Mario goes to one "group" and Kirby goes to another. Retro Studios is also a first party "group" who develops for Nintendo. They are all under the same house name Nintendo and it's easier to refer to them as one big group rather than EAD 1 or Nintendo SDD.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo (That'll give you a little better info.)

I still don't see the difference. They're still different studios, developing different games. I can understand that the EAD groups are combined.  That's akin to how Naughty Dog has 2 teams now, but why are HAL, Retro and Monolith (etc.) thrown in there as well?

They're all combined and called Nintendo. Why aren't Naughty Dog, Santa Monica, Sucker Punch, PD, MM, Guerrilla (etc.) combined and called Sony? (I know that in reality they're all combined under SCE WWS, but nobody speaks of them as one entity like they do with Nintendo's first party studios.)
