Forums - General - Athens or Sparta?

A hard bent, totalitarian monarchy vs the origin of western democracy, science and philosophy? Well, given how useless the average ‘free’ human of our modern society is, and the fact that the Spartans beat the shit out of the Athenians, I have to side with... The Romans.

I Choose Πελλα (Pela), the Capital of the Macedonian Empire. Anyway Athens is really polluted and Sparta? Uhmmm, nope! (ειναι κανεις Ελληνας ρε παιδες? Μονο τον Akira ξερω. Tι ακυρο thread ειναι αυτο?)

Alright this is pre-Peloponesian war so the Romans are pretty much only a tiny city getting ravaged by the Gauls (Modern day France, yes France used to have balls). Sparta had a duel monarchy meaning two kings. They took away male boys and put them in government sanctioned schools until 20 at which point they could marry but still had to live with the military until age 30. I know a little less about Athens but it had a high population at that point but it was overall ok.

@Epinefridis, as this is pre-Peloponesian war the Macedonian Empire had almost no power, it wasn't until after the war that the Macedonians gained a lot of power and took over Greece.

Υπάρχει έντονο Ελληνικό στοιχείο φίλε αρκεί να παρακολουθείς τα threads..Anyway aside my fellow compatriot, Athens. Being the cradle of democracy (Not the PC game) wins over totalitarian societies anyday, no matter how many cool memes they spawn.

"Mama-mia!"

Oh, sorry, I'm just too much of a fan of the Romans not to mention them (they won out in the end, you know). Besides, I thought the rest of my post adequately explained what I thought of the two largest Greek city-states before the Peloponesian War, so I think I was entiteled to that little jest.

Yea the Romans were Great.  They just got too big to manage.  The Greeks failed in that they could never properly unite as a people only as seperate city-states.

I would chose Athens.

The Macedonians weren't even really greeks.  The archelogy and ancetdotal historical evidence of the time points to them being of a different ethinic group.

I'd go with Athens of the two, as Spartans culture was rather... well spartan.

There is a reason why one who buys nothing unessential and does nothing for pleasure is called living a spartan lifestyle.

big time athens, i would want freedom!
