Forums - Sales - A million sales pretty much guaranteed for Dragon's Dogma in Japan

Videogamer

Dragon's Dogma, Capcom's action RPG could be seen as a risk outside of Japan, but in its homeland the game is assured success, producer Hideaki Itsuno has told VideoGamer.com.

"I don't know if other Japanese developers are trying to become more global, but I know we definitely are," says Itsuno. "It's difficult, because we really want this game to sell 10 million units worldwide. We want to sell a lot, and that's just something that we think we can do. We're not positive [it will be a success]. Of course it's a risk, but that's what we want - a challenge.

"But in Japan, we can absolutely sell a million units. We know that's attainable, it's absolutely do-able. We have a kind of assurance that that will happen, but for worldwide that's not so much the case, and I think that's why a lot of Japanese developers are hesitant about going global. It's because they don't have that assurance that it'll be successful."

Sales aside, Itsuno says working on Dragon's Dogma is a dream come true.

"When I was a child I always had this dream of making a realistic fantasy open world game, and now I'm able to make that dream a reality," he says. "It's a first for Capcom, so we really hope that it's received well. We're doing our best to make it a great game."

Dragon's Dogma will be released on May 25 on PS3 and Xbox 360.

It will be a surprise to me if it sells close to 10 million copies; nevertheless, I'm getting it day one. It may even be my only pre-order of the year.

I usually don't get games on launch date; too expensive. I wait a year to pick them up for half the price (or less).

While the likeness to Monster Hunter is evident, I highly doubt it will sell a million copies in Japan, let alone 10 million worldwide. I can picture some people being mad at Capcom after the whole SFxTekken DLC fiasco, so they may not buy any more of their games.

Well, it's not impossible, but very hard to do that.

What is this game? More like Monster Hunter or more like Skyrim?

Nsanity i went through some old threads yesterday (i was bored) and it seems you find some of the best, so keep it up. love the consistency of the quality you bring to the site, and thread content.

ot: 10m is very high ambition. i look forward to playing this game, or at the least hearing more about it, before it's release.

I want to play the demo of this game first and then decide whether I get it or not.

10m does sound nice, but unlikely.

If Demons Souls and Dark Souls didn't sell 10million what makes him think this will? The Capcom name has been tarnished to hell and back. I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't sell a million in Japan, and neither should Capcom.

Shouldn't we have a taste of preorders by now in Japan?
