Another note: be careful what class you choose! While there is always some flexibility in a class, there are some things that each class will simply never, ever be good at.

Priest: Heals/Damage. Those are the strengths of a priest, and you can't really do them both simultaneously. It's one or the other. When you first see a Shadow Priest -- who does damage -- you will think "Holy crap." Shadow Priests are one of the best solo class/specs in the game. I play a Paladin and a Mage, and regardless of which I'm playing, when I'm alone and I see a Shadow Priest, I turn and run.

Paladin: Heals/Survives. In some ways, that combination makes Paladins the best "healers" in the game -- because ulike Priests, Paladins are really hard to stop. I personally love it, because I can stand there in the middle of all the enemies and they can't do a damn thing to stop me from healing, but a LOT of people dislike it. When you're playing a character for a long time, it gets painful when you can't kill anything. And trust me, as a Paladin, killing won't be your strong suit.

Shamans: Heals/Damage/Survives. The amazing thing is, a Shaman can do all three of these things at once; a Shaman can theoretically be a killer, a healer, and a survivor all in one build at one time. This sounds amazingly awesome, but it definitely has downsides; first of all, you aren't quite as good a healer/damage/survivor as a Priest or Paladin would be at their respective jobs, and second, Shamans are extremely susceptible to CC (crowd control, like turning someone into a sheep as a mage). That may not sound important now, but trust me, CC is an extremely crucial part of the game, and Shamans weakness to it matters later on. A LOT.

Druids: Heals/Damage/Survives. Unlikely Shamans, Druids are only really capable of doing one of these things at a time; they can either be great healers, damage dealers, or survivors, but never three or even two of them at once. The upside is that you really are GREAT at your job when you choose it and stick to it; Druid healers are some of the best in the game, Survival druids are amazing PvE tanks, and Cat druids dish out as much damage as a Shadow Priest does.

Hope that helps. There are obviously other classes, but these are the only healing one. Let me make this point clear, because it's important; any of the four listed classes could be the "main healer." You do NOT need a Priest, and there are not obviously the best healers. All four of these classes are effectively equally good at healing.

the game is lots and lots of fun, and as long as you're playing it for fun then i guess its ok. but there came a time when i was playing that i realised i was playing it just for the sake of getting new gear and getting quests done, and wasnt really enjoying it :S seriously, friends and a life are more than likely way more fun than you'll have on WoW (IMO)

@Bodhesatva-- wow. thank you.

After reading that I think I will go with Paladin (for the armor)

Don't do it! Stay strong!*resists starting up old Shaman.* I think we need a support group for former WoW players...

if it wasn't for the fact my computer literally died i never would have been able to quit. i just have to keep in mind, i didn't restart because life was better after i quit. life is better without a full outfit of shiny purples.

It took an even more dramatic event than that to make me quit... my guild leader robbed the guild bank and switched servers. The entire guild bank. Tens of thousands of gold, epics, and materials. Then, as if it wasn't bad enough, he logged into the accounts of the class leaders, who he had the account info of, sold EVERY piece of gear they had, and mailed the gold to his account.

Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it), I was the Shaman class leader. Of course, Blizzard wouldn't refund anything because we gave out our account info and it was our fault. Everything I had worked for... every character's gear... all of it was gone. I was left with a naked shaman that I had put 180 days into in a year and a half. I had no choice but to quit if I wanted to retain my sanity. Turns out it was a great decision.

I guess I should be happy I have a short attention span. It doesn't matter how addicting a game is, I will quit after some while. This also applies to paying attention in class, unfortunately :(

Seriously MMO's are bad for your life.

I played RS for ~5 years, 2001-2006, although I managed to keep some semblance of life during those years my life has undoubtably improved since I quit.
WoW is even worse than that. I know a person who spent literally ~19 hours per day playing WoW. It shouldn't be possible =$

you played Runescape that long.. how could you handle the torcher of the bad graphics and gameplay?

anyways. Weezy everyone is truly looking out for you. Honestly Id say get addicted to something else like crack or pot. Its safer.

I was addicted to FFXI. Leveling up a character to level 10 is equal to what it takes to level to level 20 in WoW. My character after I quit was level 99 Red Mage (Maxed Experience), Level 49 Summoner, and level 24 warrior. In FFXI you can have up to 3 jobs per-character and summoner is the HARDEST one to obtain as the red crystal needed to all you to become oen is rare as hell.  I also killed all 12 legendary dragons, had the best armor, etc, etc. The game literally took away my life for 3 years. All this is before the 3rd expansion was released. My account as of now has been deleted off of Square's servers to never be activated again. Thank God.

DO NOT GET INTO MMORPGS THEY KILL YOUR SOCIAL LIFE AS WELL AS DESTROYS YOU.

Oh, and if your guild was anything like mine, you might as well join the military if you are going to join a raiding guild.

And my old Galaxies Guild Master wondered why I didn't normally join guilds. =P

damn naz, that suck hard.  my character is still there but doesn't have anything all that special.  my computer died just a couple weeks after hitting 70 so i have mostly crap gear.  feel free to look it up on the armory if you want a good laugh.  marykateaa (priest/main) märykate (mage/farmer) on detheroc.

my guild was fairly hardcore but i never became class leader, never wanted the position.  As a healer who maintained most of my friendships with the other healers i was completely satisfied with being able to have anyone that annoyed me that day die an obscene amount. xD
