Relating to that, I agree that something needs to be done in these forums to try and encourage non-spam activity again- this thread and the Mafia thread were really the only reasons that I was regularly visiting the site anymore. I think it'll pick up a bit after E3, which is nice, but we need long term solutions. Banning of elimination threads and dramatically reducing the number of sub-forums would be a good start imo.
No idea why I'm posting this in the MLP thread rather than the actual thread to discuss this matter, but I thought that not all of you would have seen the topic discussing whether sometihng about the forums needs to be changed (after all, it was in the website feedback board, which I never use :P)

Sorry, it turns out I confused you with Soriku. I think I actually met you by way of the Mafia thread.
I met Soriku when he created an elimination thread -- the 2007 User Popularity Elimination Game -- and couldn't be bothered to keep score and so on. It just so happened that I'd had a dispute with someone about how many times I'd voted them down or something like that, and for some reason "count all my votes" turned into "count everyone's votes", so I was in an ideal position to take over administration for the thread. I did so, and managed it until naznatips won, and I handed out awards for stuff like people voting themselves the most, people eliminating the most people, people eliminating themselves, and people just getting tons and tons of votes on them (RolStoppable won this easily).

I was certainly more active then. And I liked the Post History better, and there were timestamps, and there was a Photo Album (I can still access my photos so I know they aren't deleted, why was the feature hidden from us ) but you're asking about the posters and the forums.
To be honest, like I said, there's really no comparison between how active I was then and how active I am now. So on the one hand, it's hard for me to judge the quality of today's threads as opposed to those of yesteryear. On the other hand, there are many, many posters that have similarly retreated from the forums, so maybe the forums did something wrong?
I think there is a worse "signal-to-noise" ratio, more spammers compared to quality posters than there used to be, but that could be simply due to increased popularity of the site.

I think, back then, the forums were small enough that you could kind of know everyone. I mean, you might not know them personally but you could go, "oh that guy" for almost anyone you met, if they'd been around for a while. Now, though, I think it's a lot easier for users to sort of be in their own corners of the forums and never meet each other. Sort of like a small school versus a really big one. It's big enough that there are true strangers.
Maybe I'm wrong though, and I just think that because I don't go into the forums as much anymore so obviously I won't know people anymore who came here since I became less likely to venture out into the forums outside of a few threads.

Probably in an attempt to speed up the site. ioi has been obsessed with speeding up the site in the past few years. I remember talking to a few mods when vgchartz 2.0 was in beta. ioi was really pushing for wall posts to delete themselves after 30 days. Luckily there was enough resistance against it to keep them.
Do you have a link to your photoalbum? I have a couple of pictures in my old photoalbum that I want, but I don't know the url =(
