Forums - Gaming Discussion - Epic: 'If next-gen consoles aren't bleeding edge, Apple will beat them'

I did not feel the need to go into depth because Epic's argument is merely a veil for a desperate attempt to pitch a product. If one wished to read into this more deeply, Epic might be signaling that Unreal Engine 4 might actually be a little much for what Wii U and the rumored NextBox are pitching (not sure if enough is known of PS4 even in rumor), and so are making hyperbolic statements like this to try to actually have a middleware market next gen. Odd statements like this could be signaling that Epic has overshot the market.

Well, while I was mostly showing the fallacy in the means he took to do that (his words), and I think I did a pretty good job at it, I don't disagree there may be some hidden strategy there.

Probably their wish is to have full bleeding edge, but they are totally aware of reality and would settle for middle-ground.

From the article, it would appear they are purposefully overshooting, in contrast with the miscalc you're suggesting. I'd rather think they're being truthful given their strategy was the same for Xbox360. If they repeat for gen 8, they are very idiotic, or more likely purposefully pushing the limits of the market. I'd be more inclined to believe the latter.

1. No, Apple is no threat to console gaming. With increasing resolutions and increasing 4G data prices(and eventurally increasing game prices), the average consumer(console gamers) can't afford an iPad as a gaming device.
2. Yes, next-gen consoles can't play it safe but they can't go all out either. We can not have a repeat of the $599 incident. Both Sony and Microsoft will need to either release a bare-bones model of their next consoles for cheap or just take a huge loss on a fully featured console. The choice is obvious.

And the leap required isn't big. Even gen 7 is stretches ahead of the iPad3.

A gen to gen jump is required due to consumer expectations. Thing is, not much is required to keep the console to tablet gap there. WiiU will have it, Sony and MS don't need too much more, and should rather look for profitability than any bleeding edge. If they give in to Epic, they will Epically get demolished profit-wise and market-share wise (either nobody will want to pay for it, or nobody will really care).

There is a new iPad every year. If next-gen consoles are small leaps then they wil get left behind.

Pippin II 2013? :0

Ask stefl1504 for a sig, even if you don't need one.

There are 2 big issues with the Apple model:
1. Every 2 years they change the hardware, meaning that the developers have to create for the least advanced model or reduce the potential market for their games, and the new devices are very expensive and not so many can buy them.
2. The current prices of the apple store have spoiled the buyers, they are not willing to pay a good amount of money for their games as they have millions of simple options for 1 or 2 dollars, that means that even if the technology is available it would not make financial sense to spend a lot a in game because the price will have to raise and the people will not buy because is "too expensive"

Yes they may have the most advance technology in 2 or 3 years, but it will be both too expensive for gaming and too expensive to develop for compared with the possible selling price of the games and the constantly new potential market.

Apple will not beat home consoles as long as they don't participate in that market. I see the point of tablets and smartphones being a threat to handhelds. But do you really think people won't buy a Xbox or PS3, because they already have an Samsung Galaxy tablet? I don't think so.

It is all about the balance between affordable and new technology.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

Don't you people get it? Apple is going to rape our fields and pillage our women.
It's the next apocalypse.

That's a good point, and one I had thought about. But I doubt the iPad will reach the levels of gen 8 consoles within gen 8, and by that time manufacturers will be seeing what Apple is up to, and will adapt their strategies accordingly.

What I think will happen is that console lifecycles will be radically disrupted by Apple, causing adapting technology within a generation, with HW revisions that could actually break backwards compatibility to software. I believe gen 8 to be the last traditional gen as it were.

I expect this from next gen atleast to consider buying into it: Better AI, WAY better Texturers better Physics, higher draw distance. No Aliasing  (most important) and more details. Stable framerate and as bonus 1080p.

He is kind of right why should someone spend twice the money on a console if he gets just polished versions of PS3/360 games. If the games dont feel better and look vastly improved I just keep my PS3 indefinetly and wait. I dont want the current level of games forever. If they dont find a way to make games better next gen then this gen (not just graphics) I am out and wait for PS5.

Don't worry you guys, we already know the next Playstation a.k.a the Gabestation will have core i7, 8gb of RAM and a suitably powerful nvidia GPU.
