It's not that there aren't any sport games, in fact there are almost the same games now that before. It's just that they have lost the attention of the media.
In the PS2 era each year we had the same debates: FIFA vs PRO and NBALive vs NBA2K. Fifa and Pro are still here and the discussion is still going on... in Europe where they make most of its sales. But EA doesn't make any more NBALive so the other sports debate isn't happening any more. And that debate was mostly focused in USA where most of the media is. No debate => no media attention => apparently no new games.

Yeah, diversity is key. A market that stays stale will lose customers. Even COD fans will become tired of playing the same thing with a different name.
I forgot to mention that not only sports game diminished but also sport related games like tony hawk or all those bmx, etc games.
EA stopped making them aswell as Sega and i think Midway had some sport games. Also, racing games. Besides GT and Forza i don`t recall racing games being great anymore.
This generation really belongs to shooters. Let`s hope things get more diversified next generation.
