Iwata on Wii U price, returning to profitability, being first to market, and constant calls for Nintendo's demise

Iwata on being first to market...

"Being first in the next generation race is not important at all. One of the reasons we believe this is the time for Nintendo to launch the Wii U is it's going to be important for the world."

Iwata on returning to profitability...

"Our intention is to return to profitability after just one year of losing money. I just cannot say that it's a good thing for Nintendo at all to record an annual loss for two or more years in a row. … The [loss of the] past year is due to the 3DS hardware sales. We were selling hardware below the cost, so this year we are already recovering and improving the profitability of the 3DS." This will change in the very near future … based up on where we are today in terms of our schedule to return to profitability."

On learning from the 3DS and applying to Wii U...

"The pricing of Wii U is going to be one of the most important elements when it is going to be launched. The environment is different. Wii U is going to be launching in a different environment than when the Wii was launched. Also, the involvement surrounding [mobile and social] businesses is different than several years ago."

On analysts/journalists that constantly call for Nintendo's death...

"Even when we were going to launch the Wii system, there were a lot of voice saying 'Nintendo should stop making hardware'. The reasoning behind that was Nintendo would not have any chance against Microsoft and Sony. The fact of the matter was: I did not think Nintendo should compete against these companies with the same message and same entertainment options for people. We have not changed our strategy. In other words, we just do not care what kind of 'more beef' console Microsoft and Sony might produce in 2013. Our focus is on how we can make our new console different than [others]."

Here's the download cards for New Super Mario Bros. 2 and Onitore

Iwata Asks: 3DS XL creation
- Upper screen's size was decided when they were done prototyping
- set screen size goal that makes the 3D more appealing
- To do this, Nintendo used a Special Process model for Big LCD TV
- They also used a new method to reduce energy consumption
- this discovery came late in the game, which is why it was held off for 3DS XL
- found that 100 ppi was suitable for 3D effect
- the speaker setup was a tough one to tackle due to the new beveled edges
- they considered moving the speaker positioning to the lower half of the 3DS
- the discovery of a longer speaker was found, which is what they went with
- the speaker is slightly smaller than the 3DS speaker, but they optimized performance
- the plastic resin used with the 3DS XL contributed to the size
- Durable resin means a more difficult forming/coloring process
- the systems ended up needing a double coating
- multiple calculations were done to make sure they could get use space in the best way

Nintendo buying Rare now would be a monumental waste of money, the studio haven't made a high quality game since the N64.

the only reason they would is to get the license to the IPs that many fan want to see revived.

If Nintendo only wants the IPs, they could talk about buying just the IPs, not the whole studio. Which, if the rumor is true, would be the best option for Nintendo and Microsoft: Nintendo would get the IPs and Microsoft could keep the studio to continue making Kinnect games and improving the avatars from Live.

But I don't think it will happen.

Please excuse my bad English.

Currently gaming on a PC with an i5-4670k@stock (for now), 16Gb RAM 1600 MHz and a GTX 1070

Steam / Live / NNID : jonxiquet    Add me if you want, but I'm a single player gamer.

I pre-ordered NSMB2 recently!

I switched my money from AC:3D to this.

totally agree if they could get the IPs only. If the only option to get them is to by the studio as well then it is worth it.

How the 3DS XL combats the issue of screen glare
- Nintendo 3DS uses an LCD screen
- LCD screens have three reflective layers
- each one reflects and causes glare
- with the 3DS XL, each of these three layers was specially treated
- this reduces reflectivity from 12% on the 3DS to 3% on the 3DS XL
- there's also another screen cover that goes over the entire screen
- this was possible due to the progress of technology and a drop in manufacturing costs
- the cost of anti-reflectivity coats was too high to apply them in the past
- the current manufacturing process and cost balance make them possible to use

“Anti-reflection has been a topic every time since the Game Boy Advance system, but most of the time we had to give it up because of the cost.” - Satoru Iwata
