@Donkey Kong influencing NSMBWii: So Retro somehow beat the 2D Mario team in making a 2D platformer?

Maybe we should start asking for a 2D Mario game developed by Retro instead of a Zelda game...

Influenced =/= superior.

First, I said somehow beat, not that it was better.

Second,

There has been a 2D platforming renaissance as of late, with games like Braid, Super Meat Boy, and Kirby’s Epic Yarn. Is there any game that influenced you or that you’re particularly impressed with?

“The Donkey Kong game that we just had out on Wii, Donkey Kong Country Returns–I actually got a glimpse of a ROM while they were still in development. The graphics were so pretty that I thought, wow, that looks really nice. We were working on New Super Mario Bros. Wii at the time, and that really became an impetus. That really kicked us in the butts. I don’t know if “influence” is the right word, but it had an impact.”

You don't say that unless you feel that you have been beaten by someone else. The Donkey game was better than their Mario game so they had to work harder to beat it.

At least, that's what I read from those words.

Please excuse my bad English.

Currently gaming on a PC with an i5-4670k@stock (for now), 16Gb RAM 1600 MHz and a GTX 1070

As I read it, he's saying that the game's graphics and graphical style was an influence. And I'm not sure what you mean by "beat", here, unless you mean that Retro were making their 2D platformer before the Mario team was making theirs... in which case, there's no evidence of this, there's only the fact that DKCR was visually appealing at the time that the Mario team was working on NSMB Wii.

Amazing artwork from NSMB2

Big shroom is back (hope they do more with it though)

I don't know why I'm saying this... but gold seems to be the theme of this game.

Plus the full cover was revealed:

That is exactly what he says:

They saw what Retro was doing and thought that "wow", so they had to work harder to make a better game.

I could care less about Pandora's Tower. I just want The Last Story.

I'm sure it is, but it doesn't seem appealing to me as the other Rainfall games. I'll still buy if does come over for support and the action looks rather fun. I'll have to look into more reviews though.
