They lost money because BluRay was freaking expensive to develop and Cell was expensive and Nvidia ripped them off on the RSX. But WINNING the HDDVD/BluRay war means that Sony Pictures can make money. PS3 itself was a loss-leader, but the tech in it made money for Sony in other places. PS3 is the least of their worries now since it is now making money, Sony need to fix their broken TV business first. As I said, develop a PS4 with less proprietary tech. As a side effect, devs would be happy too.

Uhm the development could be cheap if they used non-proprietary parts. Get IBM to make a 6-core regular CPU, none of that Cell garbage, negotiate an HD 7750 based GPU from AMD, slap in 4GB of DDR3 and 2GB of GDDR5 for the GPU, and make a sexy outside. Don't go XDR2 RAM, too expensive, just added costs even if it is blazing fast.

Quitting would be horrible for Sony. Sony is losing its brand recognition everywhere except PlayStation. Don't just give up that easily. And you think 60 million PS3's was a failure? The stupidity of some people is amazing.

Define failure.

Quitting out of TVs would probably be a better option at this point. It's the more likely thing to happen then quitting gaming. They may need to go the Wii route next generation, though.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

Conservatives:  Pushing for a small enough government to be a guest in your living room, or even better - your uterus.

Actually, Playstation is losing brand recognition, it's just not lost and is still very profitable. And he never said PS3 was a failure.

OT: Releasing PS4 now would be suicide. Vita needs more attention and can even steal some from Wii U using the same kinds of controller-functioinalities.

releasing a PS4 isn't necessarily suicide, but if they cock up it could potentially be business suicide. Basically, it is how the PS4 is released, not the idea of a PS4 in general.

sony is known for releasing "powerful" consoles..  if they cant do that next gen what else do they have to offer?

Graphics/Online?  i think Microsoft has that spot.

Name brand/Games? Nintendo says HELLO!

So you tell me what?  i think the best thing to do is just quit. like Sega did.

What do you guys think?

I stopped reading at "Sony known for releasing powerful consoles" How old are you really? Were you introduced to gaming this generation?

Thank god Sony don't have to even hear the opinions of people like you. Spare us your 2 cents next time. I think its better to go back to your CoD and let the thinking to smarter and older guys.

Why do you think microsoft will have the most powerful console?
And in terms of online capabilities, SONY isn't very far behind imo and some would argue it's on-par at this stage.

And what makes you think SONY won't invest in another console? They need to make money, and if there's anything they should invest in, it's a home-console. PS3 is now making a lot of money for them.

What SONY could have next gen is being the only manufacturer really trying to capture the hardcore with the most powerful hardware and excellent exclusive software (like they have now). SONY is in a hell of a lot better position then microsoft when it comes to 1st party games. If Microsoft also go down this route then the'll be tough competition, and it'll be similar to this gen in many ways. If Microsoft go down a more casual route, SONY has won the hardcore audiences. All they need to do is give it an affordable price ($400 max), a stellar launch line-up (like the PSV) and market it well (The hardest thing for SONY to do). Does this mean it'll sell like the PS1/PS2? Probably not, but it'll have a market for itself, with little competition in winning hardcore gamers.

All signs point to Microsoft going to a system built around Kinect next gen. Sony could lock up core gamers by default if they don't drop the ball

oh look this conversation again, but with a weak OP thats doest give anything but the most reasoning.
