Forums - Gaming - Epic's GDC 2012 Unreal Engine demos shall have you gasping

Examiner

With GDC right around the corner, starting on March 5th, game developers are prepping their presentations to show fellow industry colleagues & media. Quantic Dreams’ David Cage, known for his work on PS3 exclusive Heavy Rain, will host a keynote during GDC – full story here – but another company is going to debut some new demos & that company is Epic.

During GDC 2012 Epic Games plans to shown new Unreal Engine demos & Epic’s Mike Capps says they have already made people gasp. He shared today, “Just reviewed all projects and GDC @UnrealEngine demos. I felt like a proud papa. Demo made people gasp, literally.” Whatever they have planned must be something really impressive to have people gasping.

As you may recall, Epic debuted their Samaritan tech-demo at GDC 2011 & it stunned audiences with its lovely visual display -- find screens here. With work underway on Unreal Engine 4, whatever Unreal-based demos Epic has planned for GDC will surely deliver some visually sharp & impressive graphics – of course whether this demonstrates what we can expect from next-gen consoles is anyone’s guess.

I do wonder why MS have their event a week before GDC, if it's just coincidental or if it's tied in with something at GDC.

Can't wait to see what Unreal Engine 4 can do

Sadly when we will see that demo it wont be the same. I heard somewhere that running a video of the engine on your computer is not the same as having a computer actualy running the engine. But i'm sure it will still be incredible :P I'm far from being a graphic whore but i'm still rly looking forward to it.

Anyone have a clue/guess if WiiU will be able to run the engine?

Considering Epic's past comments of not being sure if next gen consoles and current PC hardware probably couldn't run UE4 as of 2010 I doubt it, but UE3 should run great on Wii U. They may be showing UE4 this year but we may not actually see a game built for it for many years unless they changed direction on UE4. I wouldn't be surprised if the tech demos are running on a $15k PC.

*gasp*
You mean to tell me Epic were finally able to make the Unreal Engine support more than 2 colors?!

Until you've played it, every game is a system seller!

As much as I love advancing graphics next gen is going to be brutal for developers financially.

*looks at enslaved, lost odyssey, Bioshock and a boat load of other titles* So erm... I'm guessing you have never played a game built with the unreal engine before?

Turkish says and I'm allowed to quote that: Uncharted 3 and God Of War 3 look better than Unreal Engine 4 games will or the tech demo does. Also the Naughty Dog PS3 ENGINE PLAYS better than the UE4 ENGINE.

You didn't mention the game with the most vibrant colours in existence: Mirror's Edge.

Excitement for graphics?
