@Seece. It was done to investigate the likelihood of H5N1 mutating into a strain that could be transfered from human to human. The answer turned out to be it was remarkably likely.

Sounds interesting, I'd be curious to know what exactly they had to change to make it happen. And I could see it being useful to give possible drug targets for whatever structural changes they had to induce in the virus.

Dangerous science for those doing the experiments no doubt, but it's not like telling people what they did is going to let just anyone do it. Hell I'm not terrible at Molecular Biology but it'd still probably take me forever and all kinds of very suspicious looking resources to copy what they did.
