I'm going to say so far the least successful non failure was the Gamecube at 24 million and the and the highest selling failure was the Dreamcast at 12 million. So far no console has sold between those numbers. So somewhere around 20 million is probably the mark of success or failure. And so far, and most likely forever, the 360 has failed in Japan. Monumentally failed. |
I think that a 15-20% market share makes it viable and not an outright failure. The gamecube was that, barely. But, I don't think that you can be a success without at least 25% of the market. 33% for leadership and 50% for dominance
But, success, like JL said, can mean different things in different contexts. Was the gamecube successful in winning market back from PS1? No. Was it successful in keeping Nintendo in the VG industry? Yes, the GC and the Nintendo franchises kept Nintendo profitable.
