I'm not familiar with all the programs he named but based on their reputation I would guess that they use up enough memory that he could most likely benefit from extra RAM.

Since you have XP as your OS, when was the last time you re-installed your OS? This may help to improve performance. Or maybe you should try some other OS, like http://www.ubuntu.com it should work on your laptop, programs are free and there should be an equivalent to the programs you use. Anyway, if you choose to give it a try, you should first install it as a dual install, since if you run into problems during install or hardware incompatibilities, you still have working Windows partition (the installing program partitions HDD for you).

Things i mentioned, doesn't improve the hardware performance, but they might get your computer to work better and faster.

Lol you are right, he is going to se a improvement, definitely...

 

bdbdbd I have nothing against Linux (Or ubuntu) , in fact I loved, and I used almost 90% of the time, but he is using soft that has not real equivalent in the OpenSource, not yet, so I think that is better if he keeps XP for the moment...

I guess that covers it, thanks to those who posted, unfortunately I'm no closer to deciding what I'm gonna do though I'm leaning towards making do with my faithful dinosaur in it's current state until I can afford a new rig.
