Since you have XP as your OS, when was the last time you re-installed your OS? This may help to improve performance. Or maybe you should try some other OS, like http://www.ubuntu.com it should work on your laptop, programs are free and there should be an equivalent to the programs you use. Anyway, if you choose to give it a try, you should first install it as a dual install, since if you run into problems during install or hardware incompatibilities, you still have working Windows partition (the installing program partitions HDD for you).
Things i mentioned, doesn't improve the hardware performance, but they might get your computer to work better and faster.
