Forums - Nintendo - WiiFit hits 1,000,000!

BTW, I would just like to take this time to point out how infuriating it is on this forum to challenge one of Nintendo's sacred cows. Open your eyes, just two years ago Nintendo was struggling to gain marketshare. Not everything they have done since then is going to break every record known to the industry.

Like I keep saying, let's be realistic. If someone wants to challenge my predictions on merit, go ahead. Just stop living in the euphoria of Nintendomination.

It really is no use Rocket, you wouldn't believe how many discussions of the same caliber I've had in here. If you think beating sacred cows in India is bad; try Vgchartz'...

I agree with your points mostly ... but a couple of questions/clarifications.

1. What do you consider "real exercise"? You said Wii Fitt was not "real exercise." It may or may not be. But a definition would be helpful. (There is mixed research at best currently regarding the fitness affects of the Wii, so you probably have some strong points to be made here).

2. You described the Wii demographic as "fractured." Actually, I think it would be better defined as broad. There is no way to define the Wii gamer because it is a wide mix. Some are traditional, some are returnees, some are casual, some are newcomers, some are children, some are seniors, etc. That means it is doubtful any game is going to have an attach rate like Halo 3. But it also means a lot of different types of games could do quite well. (And I find your predications to be fairly reaslistic).

Mike from Morgantown

Exercise criteria (as pro's see it) is mostly leveled at a certain amount of intensity and strain on the human body versus the person's height weight and relative muscle-mass. Like RocketPig, and as a person who hangs out with everything from Pilates instructors to aerobics fanatics and bodybuilders and powerlifters; I really don't see it either. I'm sorry, but I just don't view that as an exercise accessory. You'd actually stimulate your body more by walking to the kitchen at a quick pace and putting the kettle on than from this, and that's not even a joke.

Say what you will as gamers; I'm a weightlifting geek as well, so this is not news to me. (Go ahead, tell me I'm ignorant because I have knowledge you might not). PS: This last bit is not aimed at you Mike.

Which parts of WiiFit are you referring to with "this"? Please name them.

All of them, obviously. Aerobic exercises and yoga are not aids to fitness anymore, apparently.

To read the pessimistic views of Wii Fit you'd think all this game does is have you stand on the board and touch your toes.

So what would you 2 like people to do, change their opinions because they are part of the majority? Also if you are both confident in your predictions then you can rub it in the face of half the site's members when they come off.

My opinion is that WiiFit has a great chance of breaking 10 mill and could possibly go on to be a 15-20mill+ seller depending on how well the actual console sells throughout the gen.

@ Rocketpig - look at Nintendogs and Brain Training for DS. They are aimed at completely different markets yet have sold 17 & 11(20 if you include the sequel) million respectively on a 65 mill userbase. Incidentally WiiFit will probably have a much bigger impact on your fitness than Brain Training has on your mental faculties.

P.S. I'm perfectly aware that you 2 could be right and I could be wrong, I'm not dismissing your opinions as garbage just because I favour N.

The issue I take with those that would dismiss the potential of Wii Fit is that it seems the most common fall back argument I've read for why Wii Fit will fail is that it isn't "really" as good of exercise as just leaving your house and running around the block.

I think that's missing the point of why we have a 14 billion dollar fitness industry to begin with.

All of us have a basic understanding of general fitness and know common exercises that could be done everyday for free (push ups, sit ups, jogging) or with minimal equipment investment (bicycling).

What the majority of us lack though is a motivating factor that gets us from Point A to Point B. This is why such a cottage industry exists with exercise home videos.

Look at the myriad ab rockers and "crunch" assisting devices on the market. In many cases, probably the vast majority, these types of equipment and accompanying videos are nothing more than placebos, or at most motivational aids that get us to do things that we would not be driven to do ourselves without them.

I think arguing the merits of whether or not Wii Fit qualifies as a real, actual workout, is moot.

All that matters is whether or not people think it is giving them a workout. I believe it will succeed there -- same as Brain Training.

And if you think that Westerners will buy this game by the millions when the Wii itself is massively shortaged, you're sadly mistaken.

Why do you think it appeals to the Japanese market but won't to the Western market?

Because the kind of Westerners that Wii Fit appeals to do not stand in line for for a $250 console and a $100 game every third Sunday when they are available.

The Japanese do.

the problem with that logic is that eventually supply must meet demand, and then they won't have to stand in line

and if supply doesn't meet demand, then there are well over 100 million wiis out there, so plenty of households that have a mom/dad that fit the wii fit demographic will buy the wii fit

either supply reaches demand and then they can walk into a store and buy one with wii fit or supply doesn't meet demand and a huge % of households in the US end up with a Wii...u can't have it both ways

Wii Fit will have long, long legs

Bets:Missed by 420k I bet leo-j vg$500 that wii will sell 31 million by 7/31/08.  Sorry, I don't think he has enough vg$ to make it with all of u that wish you could. Hit, with room to spare I bet kingofwale a 1-week ban that wii Americas ltd sales>360 Americas ltd sales as of the numbers for week ending 7/05/08 (using vgchartz homepage #s)

Predictions:

Wii will sell 18-20mil by 12/31/07  CHECKWii will sell 45mil+ WW by 12/31/08Wii will surpass PS2 sales WW by 11/17/11 (5yr anniversary)Wii Fit will hit 12mil sales in 2009MKWii+SSBB+Wii Fit+SMG > 50 mil sales by 2010 > gta4+mgs+gt5+ff13+haze+lbp

Wii Fit will cost $100?

Now I have serious doubts of it becoming this huge uber selling game.

see, you guys fit into the 'workout' demographic...u guys run and may lift weights, etc

but the people who will mostly buy wii fit are the ones who sign a 3year contract for gym membership at 50/month and go maybe 2 times...the people who buy abcizers and thighmasters and the vibrating ab machine and all those other devices

that 14 billion industry in the US which is much larger than the gaming industry in the US

it's a bad argument to say we are predicting success just because it's a Nintendo product and thus a sacred cow

we are giving reasoning why we think it will sell well

as an aside, many of us believe there will be many games that utilize the balance board...and so many 'gamers' will also buy wii fit so that they can have the balance board

and again, wii is played by the WHOLE FAMILY, which is something that didn't happen with other consoles

so junior will play ssbb, etc while jr and sis will play mario kart and mom/dad will play wii fit...and they'll all play wii sports together

Bets:Missed by 420k I bet leo-j vg$500 that wii will sell 31 million by 7/31/08.  Sorry, I don't think he has enough vg$ to make it with all of u that wish you could. Hit, with room to spare I bet kingofwale a 1-week ban that wii Americas ltd sales>360 Americas ltd sales as of the numbers for week ending 7/05/08 (using vgchartz homepage #s)

lol if this is a success in the US and Europe hundreds of thousands of Wii Fit will find themselves beneath the Teleshop Stairmaster and Thigh-Shaper in the cellar in a couple of weeks. But I doubt it will sell outside Japan.
