I like how he crouched really close to the manhole while he lit the match ensuring that he would get hit by the manhole cover. At least it made impact with his arm area more and not direct shot to the head. It probably would have been death if it hit him straight in the face.

Yea, he probably knew there was a gas leak there hence he was lighting a match. I suppose he just didn't expect there to be that much gas... Who was the cause of all that gas is the big question?

It wasn't gas as in natural gas. It was a sewer and the built up gases from human waste are combustible. I also think he was lighting a firecracker for his kids that were with him. Of course I'd bet he's done it before with mild fire reaction and this time it was just a lot more built up fumes.
