Damn. The Playstation brand is injured, but not dead. Changing the name might be a good way to kill it though.

Playstation 1, Playstation 2, Playstation Portable, Playstation 3, Playstation Vita... yeah I think it's time. I really do like the Playstation series, but after that many Playstations I think it's time for a new name. I understand that with a console as popular as the Playstation Sony would want to continue the brand (Just like Nintendo is doing right now. Wii and the WiiU and the DS and 3DS); however, after 3 home consoles and 2 portables a new name is long overdue. Maybe their next console will be called the EHQ, Entertainment Head Quarters (joking).

They're currently in a great position to consolidate strategies: compete directly with Samsung's SmartTV by relaunching the Bravia range with PS4 technology built-in. Sell each unit at a loss to add that little extra value incentive.

I don't agree. Personally, I like the name "Playstation". Sounds cool, is world renowned as a Sony product and is still associated with a quality game console despite the PS3's underperformance in the market compared to its predecessors.

The people that don't want them to change it AREN'T the reason they would change it. They change it to broaden out the market. I think it makes a a lot of sense, and the GameBoy to DS example in the article is a perfect illustration.
