Forums - Sony - Sony's Q3 FY2011 Earnings (2 billion loss - 6.5m PS3 / 2.4m PSP / 0.9m PS2)

They need to ditch their TV division fast.

With these losses and a further 800m loss next Q do they run the risk of being downgraded further?

The 800m due the join venture with Samsung (TVs) was posted in this Q, no? For that the looses is 2 million.

Shit numbers for consoles all around it seems, looks like the market has stagnated. Also would the acquisition of Ericsson for 900-something mil fall into this loss? Can't read the whole report, too early for me

AFAIK a buy doesn't count as a loss, at least while you don't sell it again or make a write off due to lower value. It's probable that the write off of the TV joint venture with Samsung is included in this quarter.

I read some place the join venture contributed to ~800m.

I forgot they had losses the last 2 Q's, so they only expect a $200m loss next Q.

I have no idea if the Samsung $800m was in this Q, would make sense though.

I know the Yen is a massive issue, but if you look at the slide for the consumer division the in Ethomaz's OP the simple fact is that Sony are selling less of everything (even when compared to a mediocre year like 2010). So revenue is down already before you factor in the Yen issues.

They sold:

Compare Qtr 3 for 2010 to 2011... just 3 months remember...

1.9m less TV's sold
0.4m less video cameras
1.5m less compact cameras
0.1m less PC's

and 2.2m less Playstation products

Many of these reduced sales are at reduced prices too... PS3 for example.

Sony just isn't the brand it was in public perception and reality.

Pretty much that.

You just forget the Vita with 500k... so 1.7 less Playstation products... and the Samsung join venture (I checked now it is $938m).

I read some guy saying it in GAF that but I don't know for sure too.

Thats horrible numbers in Losses... Holly shit. with this i cant see a new Playstation coming out anytime soon, not with Vita coming right now...

Wich leaves Microsoft in the best situation they could ask for, launch Xbox 3 this year, tons of marketing in Europe and with shitloads of Japanese Exclusives, exclusive FIFA, get the Rest of the European Market and lead the way.

So what will happen if Vita Fails here?

Not this year, man...it´ll probably launch in 2013 :)

If the Samsung thing is in there its not AS bad, but its still quite terrible.

Argh_College's scenario could easily play out in 2013. -> Microsoft with full coffers and a at least a year headstart against a cash-strapped Sony.

This makes me think that Microsofts next gen sting isn't going for Sony, but for Nintendo. Why waste ammo...?

Microsoft has alot of money, they can make 720 very very powerfull, lets say 10x+ or 15x+ than 360, lose money on the Console but keep making money on 360s, on Kinect 2.0 and on Xbox Live.

Also i dont know what Microsoft is going to do about Xbox Live, will 360 Live be the same as Xbox 720 or will be different dashboards ? Well they will lost tons of Live members because not everyone will buy 720 at first...

Well they can, still launch 3rd party software like FIFA, Cod and many others and keep 360 going strong and increase their Live Members.

Ehh a pity but it seems X360 won the year.

As for Sony I think it's time to accept a lose of face and drop TV business since it seems to be dragging whole company the most.

Next quarter will be interesting to see if PSV can improve their numbers.
