Everyone loves a good conspiracy theory - and I've got knowledge of a wide range of them to discuss with you - I'll be making a new one of these every week. :)
I'll post up the facts, and then you have to make your own decision on the matter. This week is probably my most controvertial one yet - was Princess Diana's horrific car accident in Paris back in 1997 purely bad luck / the result of pushy paparazzi, or something more sinister?
- At around 4:00am on the 31st August 1997, Diana, Princess of Wales, died in a car accident in a tunnel in central Paris. There were 3 other people in the car: the chauffeur, Henri Paul, a bodyguard, Trevor Rees, and the princess's companion, Mr Dodi Al-Fayad - the son of an Egyptian billionaire.
- Al-Fayad and Paul died in the crash, along with the princess.
- Princess Diana's death horrified the United Kingdom; she was enormously popular with the British people, and millions attended her funeral.
- Naturally, after such a serious incident, people started to question the official account of the events. What if it wasn't accidental?
- One of the most vocal opponents to the official account is Mahamed Al-Fayed - the father of Diana's companion, and former owner of Harrod's. He claims that they were murdered because they were lovers, and the Royal Family couldn't bear the possibility of the two producing a Muslim child.
- He believes that Henri Paul plotted with the Royal Family to kill Diana and Fayad.
- In December 2006, Lord Stephens, the former head of Scotland Yard, announced Operation Paget - an investigation into the deaths. However, the report found no conspiracy.
- Princess Diana herself contemplated her murder: accoring to The Telegraph, the princess sent a letter to her butler saying "My husband is planning 'an accident' in my car, brake failure or serious head injury..."
- Originally the investigation found the driver, Henri Paul, to be intoxicated at the time, which caused the accident- however these results have also come into question, and some believe that his blood sample was switched
- There are a number of other claims, from that Dodi Al-Fayad was the real target, to Princess Diana being pregnent or that she faked her death.
- Mahamed Al-Fayed produced a documentary into the conspiracy, called "An Unlawful Killing"- this film will likely never be shown in the UK due to certain laws prohibiting it.
- More than a decade later, questions remain. Was this a case of tabloids running with a conspiracy to sell papers, or was there something much deeper that occured that night?
