Forums - Gaming - Report: Wii U has twice the power of Xbox 360, still not enough

VG247

A Develop source has claimed Wii U has twice the processing and graphical power of Xbox 360, but it still contains less than some studios expected.

According to a developer speaking under the condition of anonymity, some designers have complained the new console is still a bit “underpowered compared to what Nintendo announced,” which has resulted in some studios having to “de-scale” current plans.

Rumors over the processing power of the device have been rampant since before E3 2011, when the console was known as Project Cafe.

Various sources claimed the new console would be “significantly” more powerful than both PS3 and Xbox 360, and that it would contain a minimum 512Mb of RAM, an R700 AMD GPU, and contain a TriCore PPC similar to the one in used in 360.

However, it’s impossible at this point to know exactly what kind of hardware is inside the system, as Nintendo’s lording an iron-clad NDA over developers’ heads. Until someone is able to speak freely regarding specs, anything relating to Wii U’s performance will remain speculative.

If the rumors regarding its processing power are to be believed, it will still fall short of the next-gen Xbox rumored to also be in development – reportedly.

Yesterday, IGN quoted a source as saying Microsoft’s next system will be “six times as powerful” as 360 with performance power 20% greater than that of Wii U.

Meanwhile, rumors that Sony are working on PS4 are also all over the net. While the firm maintains it is not ready to contemplate discussing a PS3 successor, it has acknowledged the fact it would be “undesirable” for PS4 to launch later than its competition.

So Xbox 720 is 6 times as powerful as Xbox 360, Wii U is 2 times as powerful as Xbox 360 ergo Xbox 720 will be 3 times as powerful as Wii U and YET only 20%? Mind blown

Piecing stuff together is gonna yeild some very inconsistance math until the systems actually release. What I would say is that if Nintendo's NDA is so great then I doubt the comparisons to between Next box and WiiU can be taken seriously at all. The comparison between 360 and NextBox might be worth reading into though.

So... that makes it Xbox 2160, not 720 :D

So its, 12 x Bull...

omg... funny thing is this rumor states an opinion on power difference where the dev has had years improving their abilities on a old console and probably less than a year or maybe even only a few months tinkering with WiiU. Additionally, there is no new comment on any specific or generalized hardware and if that hardware prove true, then in fact this opinion is flat out wrong.

I still firmly think WiiU will be 5-7x more powerful than PS360 while neXtBox/PS4 will be 6-9x more powerful than PS360. Basically bringing a PS2 to Xbox type of range again... and this time with so much resources put into similar engines, we'll "see" little to no difference in 3rd party titles with the exception of utilization of hardware/controller options and enhancements.

While "major" gaming websites have been known to publish false rumors, they tend to be dramatically more reliable than "small" gaming websites publishing rumors from anonymous developers. While IGN could be wrong, they're far more likely to have gotten their information from a developer who is known to be working on the Wii U, and confirmed the information from a developer who is working on Wii U projects from another studio.

IGN's stupidity EXPOSED, WiiU 2x the power of XBOX720
