Forums - Gaming - OXM: Dear PC graphics snobs - you're holding gaming back

You have a party comprised of Nintendo, Sony, and MS clicks just hanging out in their own circles and having a good time.

Then the PC guy crashes the party, starts talking smug, and the 3 clicks just want him to shut up and leave because nobody cares what they have to say.

Thats a PC gamer in our books. They arent part of the console war, they feel left out so while nobody cares, they like to jump in with their two cents.

Have your superior rig setup but I have the more socially acceptable option: consoles. That and im a gamepad gamer first and foremost :)

Good for you that you feel socially accepted

Battlefield 3 is much better on the PC largely because it supports more players per match, superior graphics are a small part of it. Battlefield 3 is a very poor example because the gameplay suffers when you scale it back for the consoles. It's not just Battlefield 3 either, I can't imagine not being able to mod my games, there are plenty of compelling reasons to buy games that are natively developed for the PC on that platform other than graphics. Just saying.

It's thanks to consoles that my PC has a lot more legs now, since no one is interested in pushing the limits for it.

I know I already posted in this thread - but after a great day of diverse gaming on my PC, with everything from browser based indie games to a modded (for the better) version of Skyrim, I've got to say "bollocks" to this article.

If anything is holding gaming back in terms of evolving its the greater drive to succeed commercially vs risk anything new. A common issue but one, with yearly CoD re-skinning and code tweaking packs, that is getting really extreme IMHO.

There's a pretty simple explanation really. With increased development costs that can literally wipe out a studio after one bad release, publishers generally don't want to take huge risks when it comes to new and untested IPs.

"risk anything new" and "succeed commercially" rarely go hand in hand. When they do, the inevitable response is to turn that new, successful IP into a franchise.

Developers that want to take risks typically go the indy route which can result in legitimate attempts to do something really new and innovative, to varying degrees of success, but on a budget. If that's what a gamer is really into, then I don't see why they would have a problem with the big buget, heavily marketed titles attempting to appeal to a broader audience.

In the case of CoD, there's an even more simple explanation; each game keeps breaking its previous sales record as the most commercially successful game published. There is not a savvy company in business that would kill a golden goose laying egg just so they could look for another one. CoD will taper off when the sales taper off.

I know all that.  That's kind of my point - the low risk/high reward focus on consoles is for sure more limiting to gaming evolution than PC.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

We should feel sorry for him.  Going by his logic he must only eat at MacDonalds and drive a Honda Civic, as those are the two mass market socially acceptable options.  That's got to be tough.

Both PC elitists and console fanboys piss me off to an extent, I was a PC gamer to begin with - HL, CS, Cossacks, Civ's, C&C etc were some of the first games I've played (Didn't have a console till PS1).. Actually had a megadrive with like two games, but PC games are what got me into gaming. I prefer PC gaming, mouse + keyboard is pretty hard to beat, the community can be real dicks sometimes though.

I find console gaming much more accessible to myself personally, not having to upgrade and just pressing the on/off button without having to shuffle settings is what makes it easier for me, but seriously when people like sales make stupid comments like that, I facepalm.

Both are great, the communities just need to stop being such fanboys sometimes, on topic I think games that barely change are what holds the gaming back, such as COD, Fifa and to some extent even Assassin's Creed, yearly rehash of the same shit every year. MW3 = MW2, I still play it, but tbf, they could have done much better.

Disconnect and self destruct, one bullet a time.

It all boils down to increased development costs. The days when one guy produce an entire game himself are pretty much done as far as major publisher releases go, or more specifically, physical media retail releases.

Thanks to DD, there are plenty of outlets for independently developed games to be published and bought. The only problem is that they are small niche games that rarely create much more than a ripple in the industry.

But there were games like Limbo, Braid and Everyday Shooter that were developed by one guy or a very small team working independently; each generating a degree of interest for their originality. It's just a little unrealistic to expect many independent developers to use pre-existing game development tools like UE or Cryengine or Source to create a larger scope project that is genuinely unique and pushes boundaries yet manages to appeal to a large enough audience that the costs of paying for the development tools and development staff don't result in a one time project. Zeno Clash (Source Engine game published on Steam, independently developed by Ace) comes to mind even though that was more different than unique.

Anyway, consoles aren't any more limiting in that respect as Limbo, Braid and Everyday Shooter were all available on console through XBL and/or PSN. There are a lot of these types of titles available, only with lesser degrees of success. Other than PSN, XBL or Steam (don't know the approval process for getting published on Steam), independent developers have iOS and Android to publish on. Other than Steam, none of those are tied to PC gaming which is really Windows gaming. I won't even go into Linux gaming which is a tiny niche.
