Vanquish is a masterpiece because the story fit the gameplay perfectly. Better story telling and such would take up to much time and slow the game down. Vanquish was fast paced and the action never stopped, it would not make since to have a story to stop and make you think or anything like that because gameplay was by far the most important aspect of the game and they never wanted slow down. The story was simply in place to move you from set piece to set piece, that's it. Same as all Mario or Earth Defense Force games, the story is simply in place to make since of going from one location to the next.

wait..you are seriously calling THAT story a masterpiece? :S we have different standards then and no better story AND story telling doesn't mean taking too much time or slowing the game down. In fact such factors could increase the intensity of the game

The thing is that there are many games that have excellent stories, it's the execution of the story the problem. The problem about making you care about a character in a video game is that those moments can be boring for a lot of gamers when developers try to interact those pieces. Not every game can develop that type of interaction and personally I would not want them to go in that direction.
Right now from ND body of work, they still have not found the solution because if UC3 is any indication, it was a polar game. Some people loved the linear what the story was told because it pushed them in the direction the developer could control and deliver a solid piece of story telling but others found it way to constricted, where going off script produced undesired results and made them feeling like they were in a interactive movie then playing a game.
I person probably will not get the next ND game if it goes the very linear route like UC3. Seeing all the action packed scenes were fine but actually playing the game kinda bored me because there was no real freedom.
>amazing story telling
>games made in the past 5 years
No. Fun storytelling? Yes. Emotional engaging and gripping tales? No.
Time for hype
The way i interpret that is not that there stories are better then others, but more so the fact of the effort they put in there stories, they research known myths and legends, take from real stories and mingle them into one story slightly changing everything so that Nate fits into it all. Just look at the IGN rewind video on the teaser announcement trailer, etc etc.... + the way that tell the story in the game is the best i've ever seen.

Do yourself a favor and stop paraphrasing. You completely changed what he meant to say. What he meant to say was that stories with mediocre stories get praised when they should be criticized.
