Forums - Gaming - Paradox: Next console generation will probably be "the last generation"

Wasn´t some analyst saying the same thing before the current generation started?...I might be mistaken, but I think I remember some CEOs/analysts saying something similar, back in 2004/2005.

Dedicated gaming consoles have already died outside of Nintendo.

The 360 and PS3 are more than just gaming machines.

There will still be a place for convergent devices. Tv set top, media streaming, gaming, etc etc all in one box.

Such is the tragedy of the industry, i suppose. The only thing we can hope for is that Nintendo doesn't get too fixated on this social networking/dlc/online play/multimedia malarkey as well, or else we'll all have to pour out a sacrificial libation for the utter annihilation of a once-proud industry

'We'?

Majority of gamers arnt even interested in Nintendo home consoles ..

Yes ... Nintendo home console install base was growing smaller and smaller up until Wii, in which a bunch of casual/non gamers jumped on board. You can tell from the SW and its sales there are few true gamers on the Wii.

Uhhh yeah... but there still are quite a few *me* and hopefully more will jump on with the Wii U. :)

*fixed. True gamers play all good games regardless of the consoles they are on. ;) That doesn't mean all non-Nintendo players are posers, but understand the point I'm trying to make: games are games, no matter the platform. Segregating on manufacturer name is nearly baseless. I understand each console with its vibe and library, but to purely segregate by console manufacturer irrespective of a specific platform (you said "Nintendo home consoles" in general) is illogical imho ...

Given I used facts and not opinions on forums to come to my conclusions, no you didn't fix it your broke it.

Way back when, Nintendo home console did have all the gamers flock to them, it's been a looong long time since those days though.

Nah it's way too early. Look at music cds - they are still here despite mp3 revolutionizing the market.

Why do you need a dedicated games machine to play physical media.

Because while there's no problem to incorporate functions of cd/dvd/br player , pvr device and netflix receiver into a gaming machine - same cannot be done with a classic Hi-fi set.

Cost of hardware needed for core gaming experience is too high to incorporate them into whole mass market.

Exactly, so you can buy a blu ray player with ovr and multimedia capability from Panasonic or you buy the same with a gaming platform built in from Sony....  That sony device isn't a dedicated gaming device is it.  You missed the point... and the guy from paradox also misses the point and seems oblivious to the world outside of PC.

But guys, what does software medium have to do with the viability of a dedicated console hardware? as OP quoted:

"Fredrik Wester, CEO of Paradox Interactive, reckons that the next generation of console hardware will be the last.

Speaking at the company's annual showcase, Wester made his traditional predictions about the games industry, foreseeing a further rise in more digital-focused platforms and distribution:"

How are the cause and effect related here? I didn't realize software medium was that paramount to the raison d'être of dedicated consoles... Don't Wii, Kinect, and Wii U show that hardware drives software, and that it has nothing to do with the software medium (digital or material)?

I'm sure there are a fair few million like your goodself, it's still disproportionately smaller than the HD base though, wouldn't surprise me if it's a lot less than Gamecube actually.

Indeed, your numbers prove my point. There are many posers that buy video games. Thanks Seece! ;)
