Forums - Microsoft - Xbox 360 "entertainment apps" usage up 50% post dash update

Eurogamer

The number of Xbox 360 owners using the system's various "entertainment apps" rose by nearly 50 per cent worldwide from November to December 2011, according to Microsoft'sMajor Nelson.

The console's revamped dashboard, which puts a greater focus on film and TV streaming features, launched on 7th December. Sounds like it's done its job.

Nelson also revealed that the number of hours of video consumed globally on Xbox Live was up 140 per cent year-on-year from 2010 to 2011.

He added that more than 60 per cent of US Xbox Live Gold members used entertainment apps during the month of December, at an average of an hour a day each.

"We are committed to enhancing and expanding our global entertainment offerings on Xbox Live in 2012. Moving forward, you can expect to see more of the world's leading entertainment providers coming to Xbox and a continued rollout of additional entertainment apps," he wrote.

4 on Demand, LoveFilm and Netflix are among the services that have launched on the Xbox dash in recent weeks.

With so many now, there's bound to be something for every one.

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

Xbox One: What are you doing Dave?

Yeah, I mean, I check out my Youtube, listened to radio stations from places I used to live with the IHeartRadio app and found some new ones (all comedy all the time recommended, dunno if its just the Phoenix area), and I've watched some TMZ stuff. I'll be all over Crackle and MLB.tv when that comes too. It's always more fun to watch or listen to things come from your TV than your computer.

Before that, all I used is ESPN (still use, and still don't get why it's considered a 'game').

I have to agree with that but I find that when listening, I much rather play games as well as listening sometimes.

If I'm doing a simple game, I would want to listen to something, but not if I'm trying to have conversations with people or hear enemies... can't have some comedian telling jokes (then you just miss both of them).

But yes, for this reason, despite owning a very powerful computer, do not own Mass Effect 1 or 2 on PC... because playing it on my xbox with a 50 inch plasma is so much more rewarding.  I'm playing SWTOR right now on PC, and as cool as seeing the worlds is, it isn't like seeing them on my plasma.  And I have dual 23 inch monitors for my PC.  But not even close to being the same.

Doesn't your pc have an hdmi out port? Mine isn't very powerful but connecting it to tv and switching to 1920x1080 was very easy. I have only used it for Portal 2 though. I admit it's too much trouble carrying the thing over and sitting with the keyboard and mouse on the coffee table in front of you. (My 360 controllers are not windows compatible unfortunately)
Another disadvantage is that I only get stereo from my pc's hdmi out. I rather play in 5.1 on a big screen with a little less graphical detail.

I spent an hour with the movie trailers section of the MSN app the other day. I didn't know anything about upcoming movies and now I know each and every one that is "coming soon".

Knowledge is power!

Pretty nifty, looks like they had good success with the update.

Although I'm still much more likely to do this all on my pc, they're both connected to the hdtv anyway, my 360 is pretty much only used for gaming.

Looks like MS did the right thing to put a heck of a lot more entertainment apps.

Yay!!!

Yes, but I'm not going to have wires coming from my bedroom to my living room.  That and I prefer the xbox controller to my mediocre mouse and keyboard.  Which I would also have to move over to.... on my lap?  I don't really have a table suitable for gaming, just suitable for putting a drink and a book on.  I keep the two seperate.  I have a fiance.  I'm nerdy enough as it is, I can't be having a specially built table so I can use that stuff for my TV :p  She would think it quite over the top.    But as you said, why go thru all that trouble when it's just a pain in the ass.

And sound is the other thing... not sure how I'd hook all that up.
