I don't see how it couldn't pay off.
I mean honestly, what would a PS4 even look like right now.
What could sony add that would drastically change the difference and make the extra cost worth it?
They could up the graphics sure, but that didn't exactly send PS3's flying off the shelves at launch.
They could go the wii route and integrate motion controls i guess...but... at this point doesn't feel like it'd help much.
So... really, it should help just because there isn't a next move to really be made by anyone.

Yea they better not. I hated when they just dropped ship on xbox 1 when 360 launched. Like they simply just didn't care.

So did I, I would have bought a second Xbox (Original) eventually for when my first broke, but luckely so far it still works 10 years later.
But unfortunately they didn't really have a choice on the matter due to the bad deals they were in back then, this time around it seems to be much better arranged for all parties.

Hehe, so true.
Sony must be quite desperate to actually try and delay MS from annoucing a new console by attempting to turn consumer attitude against such an announcment. Deseperate indeed.
