December 2011 NPD highlights:
· Holding a 46 percent share of the overall current-generation console market, Xbox 360 sold more than 1.7 million units in December, solidifying the number-one console spot in the U.S. for 2011. This marks the tenth consecutive month Xbox 360 has held more than 40 percent of the current-generation console market share, and twelfth straight month Xbox 360 was the top-selling console in the U.S. (Source: NPD Group, December 2011.

It's true, DIRE numbers all round.

Wii + PS3 = 1.85m?

I agree, if these numbers are true, then we were all baited the wrong way during the month of december. You might have to extend the final date of entry for your 2012 prediction thread, cause i could imangine a lot of folks will  like to change their predictions after shhipments comes in.

It appears as if we will have to wait for shipment to finally settle this 2011 clusterfuc. I suggest we all chill til we finally get concrete numbers.

You know things are bad when Europe is the savior of the 360. MS obviously over shipped so they can keep their claim of winning 2011. What crazy turn around.

Balmer should have let the numbers for Major Nelson, he was on point all year, Balmer is to blame, he apperently fudged the numbers and confused everybody.

Its becoming more evident, at least to me, that MS overshipped this quarter. I have a particular feeling that multiple retailers wanted to return stock on the 360 they ordered but MS compensated by covering the cost of the gift card promotion which for most retailers average between 50-100 dollars. Even with the big black Friday and all the promotions afterwards (for the 360, both the Wii $99 deal and the $199 PS3 was for one weekend only) that still wasn't enough to move consoles out the door. Future shipment order will be the tale tale.

Those looking for a European mircle, i direct you to the massive warning that Tesco (UK largest retailer, 3rd largest in the world) gave. You wont find the sales there.

There is no European miracle

Finnaly Nintendo numbers...

"Wii sales down 55% year-over-year; combination of losing its luster and the Wii U coming out next year. 3DS sales solid, though."

Wii 1,059k
PS3 ~940k (depends how much 1.7 million 360 is over)

I'll refrain from shouting out strange comments untill ALL the numbers are actually in.

But I agree with Seece, 3M consoles on shelves is unlikely.

As for this thread, it's like the akward conversations I have with the girl that never quite became my girlfriend. :-p

What? Madness!

You're not a true poster on VGC unless you suffer from a severe case of foot in mouth disease.

3M on shelves isn't just unlikely, it's improbable. NPD only covers NA, so either the numbers are off (highly unlikely) or it just means the 360 sold more units in EU.

Or we need to wait the shipment number next week.

One thing that particularly bother me last week was when gamestop quietly announce that hardware sales were down 20% for their holiday quarter year on year. How could that be when every system had some kind of major discount on it?

You know, that sounds like a kooky theory on the surface, but I think some retailers are still doing gift card promotions in January, which would lead credence to the overstock possibility.

That should settle the matter. Of course if MS keeps shipping the same numbers and retailers are still offering $100 gift cards into February, then something is probably amiss.
