The weird thing about this story is how it seems a lot of sites are trying to make it far bigger than it is. While a lot of sites state that it's a prediction they never the less only quote her in a way that makes it sound like she is speaking factually. All the quotes I have seen simply say "Not all of the current console makers will have one more generation. That will be the big news at E3."

Firstly it's bad journalism as they are stating that as if it's actually 100% what she said. What she actually said was
“I think some will have one more cycle and I think others will not,” said Reeves. “I think that will be the big news at E3. That's just my prediction.” Yet all the game 'news' sites decided to edit out the first think, the second think and the prediction part.

The really ridiculous part of the story is that someone else on the panel gave this response to Reeves' point. ''Mike Vorhaus, Magid Advisors: “I think Nintendo will be the one to do what you are suggesting [opt out of the next gen].”''
This guy predicted Nintendo won't be part of the next gen... despite them already having shown and announced their next gen lol.

Yeah I'm a bit late to this thread, but I'm also calling bullshit.

The Xbox 360 has nearly tripled sales of the original Xbox and it's been making money for the past couple years, and Kinect was a huge hit so they aren't gonna abandon that. No way MS isn't in it next gen.

Sony would be more likely to be out, since they lost huge bucks this gen, but I'm pretty sure they've already hinted that a PS4 will be coming. I think this has as much credibility as all the Xbox fanboys who said the PS3 would cancel production in 2007/2008 and bow out.

Depends on who keeps their walled garden. Sony isn't doing this. At least for PS Suite. In the end PSN will be available on every Android device. Microsoft puts LIVE on iOS and Android (CES 2012). ONLIVE and Gaikai will probably be everywhere.

Will Sony release on iOS and Windows platform? Don't think so.

For now it seems like Android has everything but iOS exclusives.
iOS has anything but Sony Exclusives.
WPhone has anything but Sony and iOS exclusives.

Wphone is least attractive for consumers, which means less hardware support. They do have Nokia, they might wanna eat Blackberry. There is still room for growth in the market. Western 50% smartphones and Rising BRIC's. Asia seems to like Free Android, but Baidu (Android-based) probably takes China.

TV
Android will start with ONLIVE, Gaikai and Google Market. If PS4 failes = Android support.
Apple will allow any platform just like on mobile. Sony won't jumpin and Microsoft won't support Apple TV. If there TV's are affordable and enough people buy their TV's. They will get developer support Easy to develop. If Apple keeps their strategy, their marketshare will shrink like in mobile.

Microsoft this is interesting, because kinect might be the future of TV. In combination with Siri (Tell Me). Microsoft has it all covered. Developers clearly like to develop for DirectX platform. This has to be an exclusive. Android and iOS or any other platform can't get this. Microsoft will also support openGL.

Microsoft clearly has an advantage. It's basically a war between Opensource en Microsoft. If Microsoft starts losing marketshare they buy so many exclusives, that kids will eventually convince their parents. Content is the way to go for Microsoft.

Microsoft has a monopoly called DirectX. OpenGL can't win, because MS just adds it like any other opensource project. MS knows we are entering a post-PC era. That's why they created Xbox. Microsoft will always dominate as long as the cloud doesn't arrive for our gaming needs.

Sony becomes just an other content company for Android. It will compete with Gaikai and and ONLIVE. The problem is that Sony can't support iOS and Windows, because of their hardware business. The real problem is that Gaikai and ONLIVE are DirectX based which makes it harder for Sony to compete. Or they also buy a MS license.

Maybe next MS "console" will consist of Kinect + whatever Windows running device the user prefers, so it won't need to develop a new "true" console, saving a lot of money.
