Forums - Microsoft - USPTO patent points to DVR function in next Xbox

VG247

The patent, granted on December 27 by USPTO, makes note that a DVR application along with a “television client component allows users to record media content on the gaming console.”

It goes on to add: “The DVR application also integrates itself with the console menu. Once integrated, users can record media content while playing games. Alternatively, users can record content when the gaming console is turned off. The recorded content can include television programming, gaming experience (whether local or online), music, DVDs, and so on.

“When in the recording state, users can also switch between various other media modes, whether gaming, television, and so on.”

Currently, Xbox 360 only provides catch-up services, such as 4oD and Demand 5, and some live TV channels, such as Sky in the UK.

Speculation on the next-gen Xbox has grown in recent months, with one report near the end of last year suggesting that Microsoft is set to talk about it at CES in Las Vegas next week.

Even if the console does get unveiled at some point this year, new hardware from MS isn’t expected until 2013 at the earliest.

Thanks, Kotaku.

The next Xbox will be mid to October 2013. Microsoft needs newer hardware to keep up with the changing trends in the home entertainment box that they are aiming for.

Wow the Next 360 is going to be dominant.

This might be the standard next generation, since even the Wii U may get DVR functionality, given the Wii supports Netflix and they've already announced robust plans for apps and such with the Wii U.

I know the PS3 functions as a DVR with the PlayTV and Torne add-ons in Europe and Japan. It's a pity that feature never made it to the US.

that actually sounds cool.Just imagine the wave of new youtube gameplays o_0

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

I'd like to know the specifics of the "television programming" they mention can be recorded. I'm guessing it would be programming provided via the Xbox itself.....right? I'm willing to bet that if MS is doing this, then so will Sony and Nintendo making it not such a big deal then. Still sounds really cool though and I hope some kind of info. is released at CES although I've learned to temper my expectations and be realistic, E3 is where the good stuff will happen.

I LOVE paying for Xbox Live! I also love that my love for it pisses off so many people.

The current XBOX was linked to the BT Vision IPTV and PVR box some years ago and nothing came of it. The BT Vision box used Microsoft Mediacreate to power it so this seemed a possibility. Makes sense that they should position this device more firmly in the home. It will also give them more routes to market which lets but honest is never usually a bad thing.
