Take out the power brick and they'll have a console slightly smaller than the first PS2.

As of Version 17 of the PS2 the power supply is integrated. Making the PSU external would be a big mistake. Bricks suck, and they can obviously make small internal PSU's since the PS2 slim has one.

If they could have made a smaller brick, the PS3 would be a lot smaller than it is.  I say pull it out and make a small PS3.

I think the first slim wasn't all that slim, they could make an even smaller version if they really wanted to, external power brick perhaps

I don't think they'll actually do it though

I'm kinda thinking no, but it could happen. Sony made a note to say that the PS3 model that came out in 2009 was not the Slim. So maybe that model was made just to get them closer to being profitable back in 2009, while they still have a real Slim model planned for 2012 or 2013. It would be interesting if they launched a new Slim with a $199 price tag just before the 2012 holiday season.

I cannot believe some people want a power brick. THOSE THINGS SUCK. Internal is ALWAYS the way to go.

Feel the exact same way.  I guess if it's as small as the PS2 Slim's brick, it wouldn't be too bad.  But I shudder at how large the original 360's brick was.  Amazing that even with an external power supply it still overheated.  Anyway, I'll always prefer internal.

SCE could make the PS3 smaller; it's just a question of whether the costs involved with a redesign will yield per unit savings that offset it. Personally, I don't see why not.

With another CPU/GPU die shrink, heat would be much less of an issue. Considering that there are currently slim form laptops with better CPUs and discrete GPUs cooled with tiny fans, it's not an issue of "if" but an issue of how cheap.

After all, the main reason for redesigns is cost savings. The additional benefit of being able to market an old product as being "new" again is really only secondary.

External power bricks will reduce the size of any device naturally, and any power brick used in a redesigned, low power use PS3 would be pretty tiny (think typical laptop sized PSU if not smaller), I'd prefer an internal PSU, not that it really matters once the thing is plugged into the wall.

Maybe, the RSX will shrink to 28nm in a few months and the Cell can very much shrink to 32nm or possibly 22nm.
