It 's a Low-Power, Double Data Rate Two, Synchronous DRAM used mostly in smartphone and being manufactured by samsung. Not surprise through, the vita screen is also a samsung product.
A lot of the parts in the Vita come from Samsung.

Sad part is that Samsung is making money while Sony loses.
Maybe the memory card prices will recoup the loses.

Plus digital sales will improve the time it takes for a game to start making a profit as well. Retailers should be getting scared. Music is already pretty much dead at retail. Movies are following suit. Gaming is next.
Vita is the beginning. PS3 is getting more and more of the retail releases on the PStore and Microsoft has about 80% of their retail library on the XBL marketplace.

They shouldn't be scared. Evolve with time and take charge and find ways to make money.
An example would be RIAA trying very hard to sue Kazaa and various similar platform. They could have just absorb Kazaa with some money that they spent on the lawyers and make it their own. iTunes probably would be negligible if they did that since they own the publishing rights and all that stuff.
When a business refuse to evolve, it'll just die a slow death.

If Sony decide to go all digital then you can get bet your ass retailers wont bother selling the Vita at all and those 80% 360 games took months even years before they ended up on the marketeplace which would had little effect on retailers.
Sony already has their own stores. Plus they could make a push towards online stores like Amazon to sell their products.
Brick and Mortar stores will die off. GameStop doesn't really have to worry since there is already a plan in place for digital. Impulse was a great forwarding thinking purchase for them. Sony cannot be afraid of brick and mortar stores.
