This is a Lame Ending, a lot of games were like that.

Go back to the 80's and check Ghostbuster, Double dragon, Final Fight and such. Some games don't even have endings (5th axe anyone).
You also have Soul Reaver 2. So you spend the whole game running after Kain. You finally corner him in an arena. You're ready for the big final fight and... he opens a TP and fly away. And that's it. See you in SR3 (which was never released).

Oh, there were some bad ones back in the day, but you know, I am more forgiving for those games because folks didn't have millions to work with making games. These new ones? Please.

Not only old ones were lame.

 

This is a lame game, with a lame ending in a lame console...

It was the end of the Legacy of Kain series, but not exactly the direct sequel of Soul Reaver. The women who wrote the story explained in an interview that SR3 as it was supposed to be was cancelled and she had to "merge" the two series in the final "Defiance".
