For me, Amazon.co.jp has always been the most reliable source when it comes to rating jRPGs.  Famitsu is...  well...  Famitsu.  And Western reviewers tend to rate games lower for attributes specific to the genre sometimes (feminine looking male characters, not being enough like Elder Scrolls or Mass Effect, and other superficial crap).

 

I don't have a great handle on Japanese and still learning.  Does anyone else that has a better handle on the language able to tell me what the complaints are about the game?

I think its mainly the main story being short. You have to go through the game with the 2 different protagonist in order to get a reasonable lenght of play time. Which is basically playing the same game twice but with a different view. And even then, I heard that the lenght of the 2 playthrough is less then Vesperia :(.

Well its not as meaty as say vesperia or abyss from what i have read. The main story is around 40-50 hours which is good. Though it lacks cameo battles boss challenges and a few other things that other tales games had on their release. Though the battle system is probably the best in the series. I haven't played much of it though just what ive hear. Funny people say its a bit short. Though thats only for a tales rpg as 40 hours is a good length for other rpg series. A friend let me borrow the japanese copy and i hate playing japanese games that arent in English so i didn't play it for longer than an hour. but i like it alot from that hour.

40-50 hours is with 2 playthrough, thats extremely short.

I dont think it is a friend of mine beat it in 45 hours 1 playthrough and he skipped a nice amount of cutscenes.

Public outlets were people just throw reviews on a game are never reliable. Look at DQ9. That game was at a 2/5 when it released. Do you honestly think it's a 4/10 game?

I generally find them more accurate than other review sources although there are some exceptions.  I'm hoping this is one of them.
