The Vita looks like a fine system, but there is something that the 3DS can have that it can't. Huge franchises.

Oh really? Just look at what's announced :P
Call of duty, Assassins creed, Uncharted, Killzone, Bioshock, LittleBigPlanet and FIFA just to name a few.

I really think sony learnt their lesson with the PSP, and plenty of 3rd parties are signed up (just look at the list of announcments), it will be very well supported.

The DS had Call of Duty, but it didn't do well. When the games are available on the HD consoles, PC, and even the Wii with some adjustments, I can't imagine CoD making huge numbers on a handheld. Assassin's Creed already appeared on the DS and PSP, but only had moderate sales. Killzone on the PSP never reached a million units. Uncharted is a big franchise, but not huge per se. Bioshock is an unknown quantity on handhelds, LittleBigPlanet is another moderate series, as are handheld versions of Fifa.

I'm not trying to diss the Vita here. There are plenty of big games coming out for it. But systems like the DS, PS2, 360, and Wii are defined by games that sell something along the lines of 10 million or more units or at least to 10% of console owners. The Vita will have many worthwhile titles, but I don't see any of those as big hits that can singlehandedly carry the system.

Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe Uncharted is a franchise best suited for handhelds, and Golden Abyss will become the best selling Action game of all time. Stranger things have happened. But from where I stand, I see the Vita as a system without a few key titles that will sell it to millions, like Mario Kart seems to be doing for the 3DS.

Yeah I guess you're right, mostly; I think Call of Duty will sell really well on vita, because it will play and look a lot like the console versions, and if that's emphasized in advertisements, I think it'll easily sell multiple millions. The reason why Call of duty didn't do well on DS is because the game wasn't that great, it played nothing like the console versions and it's target audience generally do not own DSs (hardcore gamers and bros). But the VITA is definitely targeted at the hardcore, and a console-like portable cod will definitely attract some bros.

Uncharted will probably sell very well, same for FIFA, Assassins creed and quite a few others, but you're right, nothing will sell like those Nintendo 3DS titles.(Could maybe get close though).

Time will tell.

PSP succeeded in getting "console-like" in its own case, but that did not help. It needs unique games and not "console junior" games. Take the "Stories" games on PSP for instance: they were unique expansions on the hit series and did decently well, but games that were clearly just junior partners of their console counterparts did poorly.

I don't think you read my "edit": Edit: With PSP sales, you have to keep in mind the unbelievable amount of piracy that went on with it, and how not many people (especially in the west) have been interested in the PSP in the last 3 years, so many of those games such as Assassins creed and Killzone simply came out at the wrong time and were probably pirated a lot. But the VITA is completely new, people are interested and it looks like sonys made a fortress when it comes to piracy. But again, I agree they still won't sell as well as the Nintendo 3DS games.

PSP was very successful in the early years, just look at the sales figures. Compared to the DS it's nothing special but without that comparison it still sold very well. The reason why people lost interest is because it wasn't supported very well in the later years, and many of the people still interested in it just pirated their PSP games. PSVITA has a lot more going for it, it'll get tons of third party and first party support, it can do pretty much anything and more than the current consoles and graphically is on par with launch titles, games will be hard to pirate and it's getting a brilliant mix of new IPs (including the unique games it needs) like Gravity Daze, Unit 13, Little deviants, escape plan + more and proven existing franchises like Uncharted, Call of duty, Assassins Creed, FIFA, Bioshock, Killzone and loads more.

I really wish the vita all the best and I would give it a slight chance to outsell the 3DS in the future if there wouldn't be one thing: POKEMON ;)

Pokemon... and Layton and Mario and Monster Hunter and Resident Evil and Metal Gear and Kid Icarus and Luigis Mansion and so on ...

Really I think in the end Vita sales will be far below PSP sales, even in Japan. The big third parties already counting the Vita dead and made all their effort towards 3DS and Smartphones/Tablets.

3DS is kicking ass and taking names. Vita ain't got nothing on 3DS. I think people are going to see that the 3DS launch was much better than the Vita launch. Five 3DS games entered the top ten, while Vita only has four titles within the top 20, in which only one title entered the top ten.

Maybe because tha PSV had 26 launch titles and the 3DS how many? 8,9?

Also the 3DS launched in a calm time while the PS Vita launched in the holiday season, and since when do sales determine which games are better?

Are you a Nintendo shareholder or a gamer?

@ProdigyBam First the games are better and two I am a Nintendo gamer. I'm just pointing out the facts, so if you want to go there I might as well list Vita's faults at launch against the 3DS's.

3DS also launched with the perception that it's price gouging with Vita going the opposite.

Lets wait for the reviews the device isnt even out in the west yet, im pretty confident that Uncharted Golden Abyss and Gravity Rush will shit all over the launch titles the 3DS had critically speaking.

I loved your article one of teh best ever read in here.

Well done!

i wish all the best to both but I hope 3DS will kill VITA. which is actually a funny way of playing with words.

Switch!!!

@ProdigyBam Failing numbers if you ask me. Vita launched during the holidays, while the 3DS launched near the beginning of the year. So by terms, Vita should have sold better because of people wanting things for Christmas or New Year's, but you see that didn't happen. I still think Vita is going to fail and if Sony doesn't get it together, their going to fail hard.

Vita just needs some big software imo. I expect the superior hardware, online and media functions to help it a long way into the future, just at the moment it hasn't got anything that'll ever post numbers like Mario or Pokemon. It's not a huge problem though - Animal Crossing, Brain Training, Nintendogs etc all came out of nowhere for the DS last gen and Vita could easily have some big software do the same, who knows.

Still not totally sure the Vita's market exists either, seems to be trying to get the COD / FIFA / AC type 360 / PS3 crowd to buy a handheld - it's a big market who buy a lot of software but no ones really sure if they want a dedicated handheld. I'm certainly not sure, but personally I'm sold on the thing so heres hoping...
