The PSP's big franchises were console spinoffs, Square Enix games, and Monster Hunter. The spinoffs should continue to do fine, but Square Enix invests in every system on the market except the Wii, suggesting that their games will go on whichever console is more successful. Come to think of it, Square Enix sold more DS games than PSP games. And Monster Hunter is multiplatform nowadays, with 3G already out for the 3DS and 4 only being announced for the 3DS so far. The DS's big franchises were Mario Kart, Nintendogs, Mario platformers, Brain Age, Pokemon, and Animal Crossing. Nintendogs looks to be smaller this gen, and the Brain Age crowd is on the iPhone nowadays, but Pokemon, Mario, and Animal Crossing are all on the 3DS to stay. The Vita's best chance is being a console/handheld hybrid, which could essentially replace consoles in Japan if all goes well. Uncharted is a great start, but it also needs to have the same Call of Duty games as its brethren, and a lot of 3rd party multiplatform support. In other words, the Vita's success depends on 3rd parties, who have a poor record from the PSP era, in comparison to the 3DS, which only needs Nintendo's support. |
Oh really? Just look at what's announced :P
Call of duty, Assassins creed, Uncharted, Killzone, Bioshock, LittleBigPlanet and FIFA just to name a few.
I really think sony learnt their lesson with the PSP, and plenty of 3rd parties are signed up (just look at the list of announcments), it will be very well supported.

Fixed. Well, almost,
you just happened TO FORGET that Xbox > Gamecube.
SERIOUSLY, this 'always' argument just embarrasses whoever makes it.
My bet would be with the 3DS, Simply because it will have the stronger game library.
In the long term the 3rd will have sold more, but I don't think the gap will be as big as it was with the psp and DS. The vita really has to bring out the big guns like call of duty or gran turismo. If the vita was to get call of duty that can perform cross play with the ps3 then it is a massive boost.

I believe the lineup of the Vita shows that Sony has learned little of the lessons of the PSP, and now that they have lost portable Monster Hunter exclusivity, the PSP's key advantage has been lost as well
Vita profits from Nintendo's missteps with the 3DS more than changes Sony has made, though there are a few improvements therein (touchscreen, and some of the launch titles look more handheld-appropriate)

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

The DS had Call of Duty, but it didn't do well. When the games are available on the HD consoles, PC, and even the Wii with some adjustments, I can't imagine CoD making huge numbers on a handheld. Assassin's Creed already appeared on the DS and PSP, but only had moderate sales. Killzone on the PSP never reached a million units. Uncharted is a big franchise, but not huge per se. Bioshock is an unknown quantity on handhelds, LittleBigPlanet is another moderate series, as are handheld versions of Fifa.
I'm not trying to diss the Vita here. There are plenty of big games coming out for it. But systems like the DS, PS2, 360, and Wii are defined by games that sell something along the lines of 10 million or more units or at least to 10% of console owners. The Vita will have many worthwhile titles, but I don't see any of those as big hits that can singlehandedly carry the system.
Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe Uncharted is a franchise best suited for handhelds, and Golden Abyss will become the best selling Action game of all time. Stranger things have happened. But from where I stand, I see the Vita as a system without a few key titles that will sell it to millions, like Mario Kart seems to be doing for the 3DS.

Yeah I guess you're right, mostly; I think Call of Duty will sell really well on vita, because it will play and look a lot like the console versions, and if that's emphasized in advertisements, I think it'll easily sell multiple millions. The reason why Call of duty didn't do well on DS is because the game wasn't that great, it played nothing like the console versions and it's target audience generally do not own DSs (hardcore gamers and bros). But the VITA is definitely targeted at the hardcore, and a console-like portable cod will definitely attract some bros.
Uncharted will probably sell very well, same for FIFA, Assassins creed and quite a few others, but you're right, nothing will sell like those Nintendo 3DS titles.(Could maybe get close though).
Time will tell.
Edit: With PSP sales, you have to keep in mind the unbelievable amount of piracy that went on with it, and how not many people (especially in the west) have been interested in the PSP in the last 3 years, so many of those games such as Assassins creed and Killzone simply came out at the wrong time and were probably pirated a lot. But the VITA is completely new, people are interested and it looks like sonys made a fortress when it comes to piracy. But again, I agree they still won't sell as well as the Nintendo 3DS games.

Not really. The Genesis came out in 1989 and the SNES came out in 1990 a year later. Nintendo had more time on the console. Sega also was gunning for power with the add ons instead of making new games like Nintendo in 1994.
