Forums - Sony - Sweet: Blu-ray movie on your PSP to take with you, nice

I'm sorry Leo, but what you are talking about wouldn't work. Have you noticed that video's from places like youtube are very low res? That's because you can't stream video fast enough to make it watchable over a certain resolution. If you want something better, you need to buffer it and even then it normally takes forever to watch anything because it has to keep buffering. A Bluray movie has way to much information to stream effectively. You might manage it if you're ps3 and psp were both connected directly to a network backbone, but even then I doubt the network interface devices would be capable of handling that much bandwidth...

There's a reason a high def video requires so much space.

Around the Network

Finally, a UMB replacement!

Shrug, seeing as DKII kicked me out of the other thread, which I unapologetically supported (There was no leo-j to astound me with his 15 year old wisdom)

The good - A new, legal way for those law abiding PSP owners to watch movies on their consoles, since there are people quite content not to pirate, and good on them!

The bad - Gee, umm, let's see. Encoding time, unless it's built in on the Blu-Ray disc in a specialty format, and if it isn't, why not allow Sony DVD's as well? Paying 40 bucks for a mostly portable movie isn't all that appealing to me, but for some, paying for a HD movie and watching it on a tiny non HD screen is something they are content with.

If it is already pre-loaded on a blu-ray disc, I'm not certain how well non Sony studios will comply with that. "Alright, new caveat for using Blu-Ray: Gotta include a 500 meg encoding of the video for PSP owners.". Thought I honestly have no idea how important that is.

See Ya George.

Dude, connect it to a tv lets say at ur friends house, he has wifi, you have wifi, you can turn on ur ps3 and use it connect ur psp(2000) to the tv and there you have it, a portable ps3.

If I'm understanding you correctly you're saying that I turn my PS3 on at my house, go to my buddies house who has a PS3 and a PSP, he turns on his PS3, connects his PSP to his PS3, I connect my PSP to my PS3 back at my house, and we then play PS3 games together. Is that what you're saying?

If so, no offense but that's the dumbest fucking thing I've ever heard.

  1. Why would my friend play on his PSP when he can play on his PS3?
  2. Where's the SIXAXIS support in the PSP? It's not coming through a firmware update and I would love to see where they stick it on that thing.
  3. Once again, why would I want to play a game meant for a screen larger than 4" on my PSP?
  4. Do you really think my PS3 back at my house could encode whatever it's processing to some form the PSP could read fast enough so there wouldn't be any lag?
  5. If by some power of the Cell the PS3 could encode the information that fast, do you really think it could get sent fast enough?
  6. If by some miracle of the Cell the data could get sent fast enough, what about the data your friend is trying to send you?
  7. How fast do you think the PSP can send the data back to the PS3 to process and to your buddy to send to his PSP to send back to his PS3 to process?
In theory it sounds like a neat idea to have a PS3 in my pocket, but it aint happening anytime soon.

No, you see, your buddy doesn't have to have a PS3, he only needs a Wifi router, then you could just connect your PSP to your PS3 which is at your house, this works great and has proven alot of times, the PS3 games that can use this feature run flawlessly on the PSP even if you're in another country. Just google/youtube remote play.

I think some of you such as Twesterm may be over analyzing it a little bit. If you want to watch your movie in full 1080p, then use your PS3 and a 1080p TV. I believe the main idea of this is to add another feature to the connectivity of the PS3 and PSP and not to take away from watching movies on an HDTV compared to a tiny PSP screen.

For example (if I had a PSP of course), I think it would be pretty cool to be able to not only have stuff stored on the PSP, but also be able to connect to my PS3 at my apartment and maybe even watch a movie between classes (or copy a movie over prior for use on campus).... That would be a welcome feature by me especially with the new semester where I have to wait an hour to an hour and a half just for a fifty minute class. Now I'm not going to only do that with movies since we have a 720p/1080i TV at my apartment (even if it is crappy) and a 1080p at home, but I think it would be a plus to still watch a movie on my PSP if I wasn't home or at my apartment.

Now the main problem I see is the price of Blu-Ray movies. I'm hardly a big movie buff with a small movie collection and I'd only rent or barrow anything I'd really want to see. If my family gets netflix or the local brick and motor place near home starts renting blu-rays, things could be interesting.
