Forums - Music Discussion - Why does most music made after ~2000 suck?

Do you believe the music industry has gone downhill during the 2000s?

Yes 79 69.91%

No 29 25.66%

Maybe 5 4.42%

Total:113

True but you do not get those epic rock songs that not were only good but hugely popular amoung the mainstream.

There may be good music today, but it never goes mainstream.

Anyone citing 70's progresive rock and hard rock as "good music" whereas today's music is crap puts a smile on my face - not because I agree, but because it is humerous to see such outright blatant pretentiousness =P

The 70's sucked until New Wave.

You have just put a smile on my face :) Anyway I like music and generas from all ages as I have already stated.

not sure if serious :/

Music has dropped off in quality since the 1990s. Music today is mass produced and a lack of singing ability can be made up with the studio sound engineers and modern technology.
Blame it on the rise of  the porn culture and a huge emphasis on selling sex instead of good singing ability/musical talent.

Randomly googled list with plenty of awesome non-New Wave 70s music: http://www.listology.com/tdunnie/list/my-70s-soul-playlist

Stevie Wonder alone made the 70s a decade for brilliant music before the term New Wave was even officially used. Not to mention Marvin Gaye (What's Going On/1972 - one of the best albums of the decade), James Brown, Sly & The Family Stone, Al Green, Curtis Mayfield and many others.

For top-40, sure. But quality is better today than ever. Just not by mainstream artists.

I mean, stuff like Epica didn't exist ~30 years ago.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Simphonic metal has not really reinvented the wheel, it's basically a modern version(and with modern I mean more metal), of symphonic rock  which already existed by this time 40 years ago. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQBSeclvMV8

If you're into psichedelia or progressive music, you should check on this site. http://www.progarchives.com/

They have a really good archive indeed, probably you'll find something for your tastes like Gentle Giant or Emerson,Lake e Palmer for example.

Also, if foregn language is not a problem, you may check some italian progressive rock. Not everyone knows the italian prog scene was really impressive for a short time, second only to the british scene. Check albums like Premiata Forneria Marconi (PFM)-Storia di un minuto-Per un amico, Banco del Mutuo Soccorso-Darwin! (I like this album so much I decided to use its cover for my avatar), Le Orme- Felona e Sorona.

Some PFM

Just finished the first link and while it had some iffy moments for me it was really good (especially towards the end).  Probably been a little better if it was in English but all good since I get lyrics wrong half the time anyways.  I was smoking a chillum for the first song and now you got me in the mood to sit back and load a few more while listening to the other links.

Since I talked about oldies being better than most new music I just wanted to throw this out there... I never really appreciated Elvis too much when I was younger. Sure I knew who he was and a few of his songs (but I was born after his time). However, probably not till after having a few meaningful relationships that I probably appreciated him even more. I don't think that is the best way of putting it but after getting into The Righteous Brothers a lot recently it was pretty easy to go to Elvis, Buddy Holly, etc..  I got into a decent amount of classic rock during high school and college years but I didn't start going to the oldies heavily till recently.  I did enjoy listening to oldies when I was a kid but soon put them to the side for 90s rock scene that exploded.

The top 40s are banging these dayst echnology allows for music to be so much more complex and exciting these days and I guess I just don't care of someone is selling out why not make the money if its there

Everyday I'm hustlin'.
