I guess some people can't help themselves with being negative towards anything Sony related... Is sad really

@Squall_leonhart: If you are referring to me.. the reason i said what i said was because, when a company PR says  "Profitability is not a definite commitment", it is generally not going to happen within the suggested timeframe.. since their job is to make themselves sound better than what they are (this is not only for Sony, but all companies.. so don't think i'm taking a cheap shot at Sony PRs)

No, it wasn't you :P

I'll tell you what troubled me with this post...

The misleading title... Unless April 09 is considered soon, and "possibility" means definite then everyone who had a problem with my post is illerate, or just plain blind.

@jphuff - They're going to shoot for profitibility in two years. This isn't anti-sony fud, its what Sony said. The best part of this is that they're aiming for profitibily "in" the next fiscal year. So it doesn't even mean exactly April 09 but sometime in that fiscal year. For all we know it could be Jan 2010 (Still considered Fiscal 09).

@TWRoO - Woo hoo!! Someone who can comprehend articles! Thank you!

Edit: @TWRoO WTH!!!  You edited your post and added a stupid comment (that last paragraph)... I take back my thank you!!

This is news why? Doesn't every company hope to have a profit during their fiscal year?

LOL nobody said this was news.  Is just a forum post geez LOL.  Every company does hope for a profit every year but many companys know when they are not going to and usually let investers know.  Again since you seem to never understand my post is just about what a SONY exec said recently regarding profits with this being a sales site it might be interesting or not.  Is just a post geez :)

The point here is while they may not be making profit soon, they are DEFINITELY NOT losing "huge amounts of money" any more. And with strong sales of PSP and PS2 ( i know not Nintendo strong, but strong) they are in much better position than we all may have thought.

What it means to me?
The "ideal $299 price point" is well within their reach, and if Xbox360 does drop price to 199, Sony can react. I doubt they will though. I still see core eliminated, Premium to $250, Elite to $350. PS3 may or may not drop price until end of year if thats the case.

I completly agree that the PSP and PS2 sales are helping Sony and the PS3.

But your point on them not losing "huge amount" is moot. First its not based on any facts and second losing money on something they plan to sell by the millions will cost them millions. Let's pretend that Sony only loses $80 dollars per unit sold, if they plan to sell 10 million this year, then they'll lose $800 million dollars!! $50 = $500 Million!

Wow ... that was fast ... I never knew that production price is droping so fast ...

Vote the Mayor for Mayor!

If you read it carefully, "Hirai noted falling production costs and a strong software line-up as key factors to help SCE turn over a profit on the high-end console."

This tells me that they aren't that close to turning a profit on just the hardware. It factors in software as well. I think it will be quite a while before we see a profit on just the PS3 hardware.

To me it sounds like they are hoping for profitability before April 09, which is actually in line with one of their earlier comments... If they are unsure whether it will happen in the next fiscal year at all then there is no way it will happen as early in the year as April 08.

However I don't see how that is a bad thing... I mean assuming Sony are being optimistic as usual, I would guess they might start profiting on hardware some time in Summer-Autumn 2009... This is a lot faster than PS2, which only started being profitable in 2005. Oh and "fiscal 2008" is what we are in now, so the Sony statement was in reference to Fiscal 2009, but as they are being optimistic it probably wont be till fiscal 2010 when profit is made [fiscal 2010 starts in April 2009]

Sony is currently in their fiscal year 2007. It might be confusing since most other companies call the same time period their fiscal year 2008.

I know, I just found that out.... seriously gets confusing as many companys seem to have a different time period for the fiscal year.

most start April 1st (Q1), and it is named by the year it finishes in, I believe MS uses July 1st as the fical beginning, and I guess they also call it by when it ends (so are currently in fiscal 08)... Sony it seems use the normal reporting time frame, except name by the year it starts in.

And if i remember correctly Apple has a fiscal year starting October 1st..... why is there no standard?

The quarter we are currently in is Q4 2008 for Nintendo, Q4 2007 for Sony, and Q3 2008 for MS.... blast them all.

Edit, @whatever; good point, so maybe the hardware will never turn a profit like with the x-box?

Sorry Sir but you are wrong, Sony nomenclature for Fiscal Year that start April 200X and end March 200X+1 is Fiscal Year 200X

EDIT : darn beaten ...

It's nice to know that Sony is going to shoot for profitability even if that is not a definite commitment. Would that all companies do the same.
