it looks like Mario party ds was the fastest selling game of the year over there.

Could the fact that hardware is up from last year but software is down be solely down to the PSP?

Well, I think the top five software units sold sum it up. MH3 is a Wii exclusive as well so thats gonna sell big for nintendo.

I do think there are a few PS3 titles next year that can crack that list; GT5 in particular, and FFXIII if it sees a japanese release in this year.

Software sales flat is essentially due to PS2 software down. As impressive as DS hardware sales are, the attach ratio will always be much lower than for PS2. Increased Wii and PS3 sales would have counteracted the downturn in PS2 to result in sales that are essentially flat despite huge hardware sales. PSP selling lots of hardware but little software does also contribute.

I wonder what platform publishers will turn to as PS2 software sales keep going down?

So obvious, so boring ...
Nintendo has 50% of japanese software market alone.

No, I think that shift of Nintendo focus from DS software to Wii software is one cause ( although it seem that software sales are stable not in decline , only 1% ).

Another factor IMO is that PS2 software ( and hardware ) is diying while Wii software ( and hardware ) is increasing , this transition of system leadership "hurt" the software sale on home-console side.

Does NPD or GFK release anything similar?
