Forums - Gaming - Sony's Smash Bros. competitor all but confirmed, test images revealed

I wonder if it'll be like smash bros or like a street fighter kind of game or dare I say Power Stone 2.

I don't know after thinking about it I don't really care much about Sony 1st party characters beside Spike, Jak, and Nathan Drake.

It took Nintendo 3 editions before had to add 3rd party characters and they only added 2. Sony better get some major 3rd party characters like Cloud or Snake because I'm not sold.

I believe you are misunderstanding me here, I'm not saying nhilistic is proven either but I wouldn't call camelot as a 'proven' either just cuz one game, especially not proven enough to give your most iconic character to them (found this game on a quick glance at mario wiki page as well, Hotel mario >_> ). it's not like Sony gave GT series to a small dev. Move heroes was a spin off casual title and Resistance is declining in popularity, so sony can in a sense can take a risk with them. I'm guessing similar scenario with MTennis (and I'm sure we can find other similar examples in ninty history). this is just business, nothing more nothing less. IF Nhilistic can actually put out a decent Resistance Vita game I expect to see more similar titles from then in coming years as well..if not meh it's the chance for another small dev to prove themselves I suppose

Except you don't seem to understand that M Tennis has nothing to do with main Mario games other than having Mario in it. It's like saying MK and M Party are the in the same series as main Mario games, and that's just ridiculous. Even 2D vs 3D mario is debatable

Nintendo would never ship off main series Mario to some other dev, and not even most of his spin-offs...

Capcom, Konami, and Namco - to name only three - have larger stables of iconic characters than Sony do.

I think that's the major issue here, not how much each individual series sells, but how iconic they are and how much people actually like them

Even though some of Sony's IP may sell similar to some of Nintendo's lesser ones, They don't have the same iconic feel... Kirby for example >> Some guy from killzone, even though they both sell about the same lately

Examples of good iconic characters might be Kratos, Sackboy, Crash... etc, but I don't think they have enough of these to fill a 30+ character roster

After reading the entire thread (!) I'm more curious than ever to see what they come up with, I wonder if they'll use lots of 3rd party characters like some of you guys suggested (It'd be kinda strange but I can't think of a reason why they couldn't use non-Sony characters)

I hope we see something announced soon... Are their any conferences/shows coming up soon???

Sony has plenty of characters to put into a cross over game similar to Smash Bros.

Kratos, Sweet Tooth, Sackboy/girl, Jak, Daxter, Ratchet, Clank, Sly, Bently, Murray, Normal/Infected Nathan Hale, Nathan Drake, Young Nate, Kathrine Marlowe, Elena Fisher, Zoran Lavarevic, Chimera, Jan Templar, Sev, Dart (LoD), Rose (LoD), Parappa, Patapon Knights, LocoRoco blobs, Toan (Dark Cloud), Colonel Flag, Dark Genie, Max (Dark Cloud 2), Monica, Emperor Griffen, Leonard (WKC), Yulie, Princess Cisna, Cole Mcgrath, Free Realms Squirrel (lol), Hell even DC characters could be involved in some way (Batman!). Just name the characters I would like to see from Sony developed games.

Let's not forget that Sony also has a powerful relationship with Namco (having published or co-published numerous Namco titles outside of Japan). Final Fantasy VII and X were under Sony ownership.

Look at this list of game IP that Sony owns. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_sony_games
All in all Sony can pull in third party characters to fill in potential holes in the roster. Auron, Tidus, Kimahri, Bahamut, Alexander, Ifrit, Shiva, Lulu, Cloud, Tifa, Aerith, Barret and of course Sephiroth. How about adding Sora? Donald Duck? Goofy? Mickey?

god, Nintendo fanboys treat this like they have exclusive rights on a mashup fighter...

I wonder why there was no upcry when Square-Enix made Dissidia: Final Fantasy, which is basically the same, just Squeenix characters only.

updated: 14.01.2012

playing right now: Xenoblade Chronicles

Hype-o-meter, from least to most hyped:  the Last Story, Twisted Metal, Mass Effect 3, Final Fantasy XIII-2, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Playstation ViTA

bet with Mordred11 that Rage will look better on Xbox 360.

I see no upcry here, just people wondering if they have enough iconic characters to fill a game like this, which is a legitimate question

@Bolded: You mean FF characters

The problem I see here is not the amount of characters, it's the perfect balance Nintendo had with SSBB.

Sony could easily include over 50 playable characters, but would their fighting style differ enough? Would it be possible to win with every character? What does it do to be on par with SSBB, or even better, to trump it?
That's the questions everybody should ask.

I think if Nintendo can pull off such balance, then theoretically it is possible, it just depends on the quality of the developer making the game

Anybody got an idea about who's making this?

Does Sony have enough characters? Will think include 3rd party characters too?

Make games, not war (that goes for ridiculous fanboys)

I may be the next Maelstorm or not, you be the judge http://videogamesgrow.blogspot.com/  hopefully I can be more of an asset than a fanboy to VGC hehe.
