Forums - Nintendo - Reggie promises casual assault next year!

I guess he is talking about animal crossing mainly, which is in theory a casual game. 2012 seems like a really good year for the 3ds though, Resident, kid icarus, luigis mansion, paper mario, animal crossing, kingdom hearts, Bravery Default FF, tekken 3d, fire emblem... It seems like 2012 is going to be a good year to be a 3ds owner.

Why? For continueing to cater to a market that helped them explode out of the rut they'd been in for two console generations and actually become a worldwide leader in the video game market? Or just making games you don't want?

Seriously, come on guys. This year you got Pilot Wings, Zelda OoT3D, Starfox 3D, Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, and Pokemon Black & White. Their casual selection this year? Nintendogs. And next year, your getting Luigi's Mansion 2, Kid Icarus, Mario Tennis, and Paper Mario. Your already getting what you want! (unless what you want is original franchise titles, in which case your fresh out of luck, lol).

Nintendo has long been catering to both the hardcore and casual crowd, especially in recent years, and while I certainly can't defend their dismal Wii line up for 2011, lets not forget that last year they gave Super Mario Galaxy 2, Sin and Punishment 2, Metroid Other M, and Donkey Kong Country returns. Nintendo has LONG been appealing to the "broad spectrum", and Reggie merely indicating that yes, they will continue to cater to the casual crowd that made them boat loads of cash doesn't change that.

Seriously people, come on. Don't act like Nintendo hasn't already been catering to you, and doesn't already have a line up of games for you next year, many of which I'm sure your excited for. I know plenty of people excited for Paper Mario, or who have been demanding a new Luigi's Mansion and Kid Icarus.

I want new ip's from nintendo, not the same old shite I have been playing for years on my nes, snes, n64 and gamecube. I know they have to play it safe all the time but come on...their lineup is too predictable at this stage.

Well I bet they were planning some new IP. I mean there was Steel Diver and I'm pretty sure a couple other IP were probably in the works. However considering how hard the 3DS had it at launch I'm guessing Nintendo probably shelved any remaining new IP. New IP wouldn't shift hardware Nintendo knows they need established IP, unfortunetly that means it is less likely that Nintendo will release all to many new IP in the future.

However Reggie did say new experiances which Iwata was hinting at. New IP would be a perfect way for Nintendo to offer new experiances so their is very much still a possibility that they will come. Though for now I think Nintendo is focusing on established titles to help balance the books.

That is all they have been doing for the past 20 years though. i ask myself the same question all the time of nintendo. Where are Nintendo's uncharted? Halo? Gears of war?, god of war? Gran turismo? Shadow of the collosus? Ico? my list goes on.  Nintendo are just not innovative enough for me anymore. The wii innovation was incredible but I don't care about hardware, i want innovative and new games. The problem with nintendo is there are never any surprises with them. You know exactly what you are going to get with the next console.... a new zelda, a new 3d mario, a new kirby, donkey kong and a mario kart.

I´m glad they are also going after the more casual gamers. So far, the only game that did that was Nintendogs+Cats.

Where is Sony's Paper  Mario, Zelda, Starfox, and Super Mario?

Different developers make different games. Further more, Nintendo HAS made Xenoblade, Last Story, and Pandora's Tower. Prime isn't a Halo killer because it isn't a Halo killer, it's nothing like Halo, and wouldn't even appease the same fanbase. Unless their marketing Mario or Pokemon, Nintendo typically sucks at it.

In any case, none of this is really the point. People aren't complaining about Nintendo not having an answer to Unchated, Shadow, or Halo. They are not complaining about the marketing. What they ARE complaining about, is that Nintendo isn't making hardcore games and won't be next year, which is simply not true.

Oniyide answered the first part, and I added in my posts just above this one.

Different devs make different games, but a console manufacturer must make all games. It's their job, their responsibility in order to ensure the greatest level of success. They see themselves catering to the blue ocean, it's a fail. They need to cater to both the blue ocean and the red ocean for very different reasons. It's not one or the other it's both. And Wii U wii shmu. Yes it's in their philosophy, but their vision, the means by which to get there is lost. They are still targeting Japanese aid in this regard, but they need to get some American and European talent for this. Apart from that they also need the 3rd party multi-plats, but in house, they need to look for talent that makes games like Uncharted, it's out there somewhere, and Nintendo certainly has the money to find it. Boy if I were pres for a day...

And hardcore hardshmore, it's only a name. What they are really complaining about is, why aren't we getting culturally relevant games (though some are so bone-head they lack to terms to say what they are actually looking for). It's not the blood, it's not the gore, it's the themes, think L.A. Noire, these games with a hollywood feel to them are a bounty when it comes to brand image and cultural relevance.

What exactly do you mean by being "culturally relevant" in games BTW.

super mario=Jak&Daxter, Sly, R&C   Starfox=War/Starhwak   Zelda=NA  Paper Mario= Sideways NY??? Its the closest I can think

Between you and me, i never got the whole Ninty needs a Halo or Uncharted or whatever game. Hasnt there been enough space marines?? Do we really want more?? Even if Ninty did make them i doubt they would be anywhere close to what those games do. So they would just keep on playing Halo anyway

It doesn't need to be space marines, it could be Samus that's not the point oni. What I mean is that Nintendo sucks at making their games credible and interesting ala hollywood. Sony can, Microsoft can, they can't. That's the point. And I demand that they hire contractors who can do it for them, and maybe even hopefully teach them the ways of success in that area of weakness. The only thing going for them atm in my eyes is the orchestras they hired for Galaxy and SS. Other than that, they are not staying culturally relevant. They are certainly fun, but not relevant.

Zelda = Shadow of the Colossus, Dark Cloud, Ico. Granted not the same, but close enough.

NSMB = Little Big Planet. => See, at least Sony tried!

Wii Sports = Kinect Sports => Microsoft tried!

Why can't Nintendo try?? What you're all failing to see is that Nintendo is a game maker, yes, but they are also even more importantly a console manufacturer, they need to cater to the broadest audience possible in order to ensure brand success. Sadly some of you more being interested in your favored games fail to see the business side of it.

woah buddy! you're right, a console maker should make ALL games, and i agree about Samus, i think its strange that there was 3 Metroid Prime games and none of them had any sort of multiplayer, this could have been Ninty's KZ, or at the least Resistance. It would have keep selling if it had it, Uncharted got a compotent online 2nd game out, hell they made a multiplayer focused Metroid for DS of all systems but whatever. Here's my thing and you're not gonna like it, I and im sure a few others dont CARE if Ninty makes these games or not. Im a multiplat owner. PS3/Wii Sony covers me on the games you are talking about, so the truth of the matter is it doesnt bother me at all if Ninty never makes games like that

Prime 2 had multiplayer, although a pretty limited one.

didnt know that, interesting, truth be told i only played the first Prime. I found it to be boring IMHO, still a good game so i never tried the others.  I did play Hunters and was impressed by the tech at the time and i really thought Ninty would take that concept and run with it, but oh well, maybe Wii U
