Yeah I highly doubt Sony will want to sell the PS4 for a loss. I could see them breaking even in Japan and Europe and selling for a small loss in the US. But they don't have the resources they once had to be ok with selling for a loss.

I agree that Sony probably won't release the PS4 selling it at a loss, at least big one ($50 max).

Just look at Vita. Everybody is telling them that they need to lower the price to make the device more appealing yet they don't want to hear it. Why? Because they can't take more losses.

Please excuse my bad English.

Yup. PS3 took way too long to become profitable. They are going to scale back on this one. Plus I don't think they will charge more than $500 for the system. I'm thinking it will be between $350 - $450 for the lower end SKU. I could be way off base, but I think they will want more people to adopt the system up front so they make more off of the games sold for it.

The Vita also doesn't really have a competitor power-wise, but Sony and Microsoft will probably be trying to one up each other. If you're going to tell me it infact does have a real competiror power-wise and they're phones, that would be like a console trying to compete with PCs power-wise.

I've never said it will be a powerhouse, but it'll still be powerful and certainly more powerful than the Wii U. Let's go with 2/3rds on what actually goes towards to console as you said. That leaves the Wii U at 20k (small profit), and I'd say about 4k (50k) towards the gamepad. So that leaves 16k for the actual console. Now let's look at PS4, I'll go with a $50 loss to be on the safe side, that's 37.5k. 2/3rds of that is 25k. Maybe 1k goes towards the controller, leaving it at 24k for the console itself. That's a lot more room, 50% more, and a year later (small factor, I know, but still makes a small difference).

Power-wise isn't important. 3DS is its competitor (primary) as well as mobiles (secondary). 3DS will destroy it overall and that is solely based on game content. This point has been proven with DS, Wii, and not 3DS. Power isn't the primary factor, its game content and overall features. Wii U doesn't have to be as powerful as the others to dominate more than Wii. It just has to have the same overall features (excluding bluray) and close enough power to garner 3rd party interest. Sony and MS should be realizing this and should focus on a system that is either grotesquely high-end (pricing them out of competition) or slightly more powerful with a lot of differentiating feautures.

Your second paragraph basically agrees with what I'm saying. The PS720 won't be as advanced over the Wii U as PS360 has been to Wii. Sure, they will likely be a bit more powerful, but not a generational difference. This, in my opinion, will actually help Nintendo. But that arguement can't really happen until Wii U is out with its fully realized featureset and we at least know something more concrete with MS and Sony's approach.

You're going off track here. I was speaking solely from the POV of power. Sony didn't need to take a loss on PSV because it wasn't competing with anyone graphically.

Ah, now I see your point. But, I think both MSony will not go power crazy. I think they know each company is facing the same financial challenges.

I see $450 as the absolute max for a console this time. The economy isn't good enough to launch expensive consoles and $450 is already a lot of money.

I honestly think 400 is the absolute max this time. Any higher and you're in NEO-GEO/3DO territory. Technically worth the money, but only the very wealthy are going to jump in on that.

Well, considering the discussion that's been going on here now it's quite clear Xbox720 will be the most powerful next gen. They could easily make a console for $500 and sell it for $400 - something Sony won't be able to do because of the strong Yen. The PS4 would probably cost 35-40k to produce. If it costs 35k Yen to make it would probably get sold at $350 for a $56 loss, or at $400 for $6 loss. If it costs 40k Yen it'll get sold for $400 for a $64 loss, or sold at $450 for a $14 loss. Doesn't this sound plausible?

This clearly tells us only Xbox could have a major leap next gen. And if WiiStation is on par with each other I figure most games will get developed for these and get up scaled for Xbox3. Thoughts? Am I understanding the situation, or am I completely off?

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

Not necessarily. I mentioned a few posts up that some newer reports say MS has changed course and switched to AMDs APUs as well. Meaning it might be nearly identical with Sony, if true. Its only one source I know of (neogaf source) and I was waiting for more on it before really considering it. But, it is a possible outcome.

However, taking it from a purely financial point of view, yeah you could be right. Unless mr monkey is right and Kinect2 is part of the base asking price.

You're a bit off imo. Xbox 3 will probably not be first in power if Kinect 2 comes with every box, if it doesn't I think the PS4 will almost definitely be a significant jump over the Wii U, but Xbox 3 has a good chance of being a significant jump over PS4.
