Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft teases 'exciting' Xbox 360 cloud secrets

CVG

Microsoft is working on "really exciting" cloud features for Xbox 360, it's claimed.

Speaking at GDC China over the weekend (via Edge), Microsoft's "cloud evangelist" Brian Prince, told attendees: "You will be seeing things in the Xbox platform that are cloud-specific. I'm already doing it, it's really exciting, but I can't tell you about it or else I'll get fired."

The Microsoft man naturally didn't go into details of the mysterious server feature, but his comments on existing cloud platforms such as OnLive and Gaikai hint at the Xbox firm's thinking.

"These are really gaming platforms as a service," he said. "There are some limitations here, but I really do think this is the distant future of gaming in the cloud."

He added: "You lose a little bit about how people are finding and playing your game, which can be important," he said. "And this is yet another publisher you have to deal with... another contract you have to sign."

Microsoft first announced an Xbox 360 cloud save feature at E3 2011 this summer, after http://www.computerandvideogames.com/292900/ps3-firmware-update-arrives-with-cloud-storage/">Sony introduced the feature earlier this year.

This isn't just cloud storage. I think this is cloud based hosting of games, be they rental or purchase.

So basically that means you would be able to rent or buy videogames and not have to worry about downloading them? That would free up so much space for 360 users with small harddrives (or no harddrive for that matter)

I don't want cloud based gaming nor digital downloads in a long long time. Ideally I want boxed retail copies to be the main distribution method for another two generations.

Yes, this is the future....they want to stop piracy and still track the things you do to sell for Ads.....
Ads in gaming that is the future too

Microsoft aims to get people to use XBox Live no matter the device they use. You want to play Splosion Man, you buy it or rent it on your cloud storage then you can play to your game weather you are on Xbox, PC, phone or tablet. To me this is convenience and it helps devs by making one platform for multiple devices so it reaches more people than the only ones with said device.

I don't think we'll be able to play big games through the clouds yet but arcade games is a given and I welcome it.
