MW3 sells 6.5 million units in US, UK within first 24 hours

Activision’s just announced Modern Warfare 3 made $400 million in its first 24 hours in the US and UK, selling 6.5 million units in the process.

The sales figure is up 900,000 units on last year’s Black Ops, and is a million more than what Battlefield 3 did in its first five days.

The $400 million mark is a staggering statistic that makes the Infinity Ward/Sledgehammer collaboration the third straight year Activision has made “day one launch records across all forms of entertainment,” according to the Activision press release.

Black Ops sold 5.6 million units in 2010 when it made $360 million in its first day, while Modern Warfare 2 sold 4.7 million and made $310 million when it released in 2009.

Activision boss Bobby Kotick claims LTD sales for the entire CoD franchise “exceed worldwide theatrical box office for “Star Wars” and “Lord of the Rings,” two of the most successful entertainment franchises of all time.

“Other than Call of Duty, there has never been another entertainment franchise that has set opening day records three years in a row,” he added.

Acti Publishing Eric Hirshberg added: “Call of Duty is more than a game. It’s become a major part of the pop cultural landscape. It is a game that core enthusiasts love, but that also consistently draws new people into the medium. It is the most intense, adrenaline pumping entertainment experience anywhere.

“I would like to thank our incredible teams at Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games for making a brilliant game. But most of all, I would like to thank our millions of passionate fans worldwide. We made this game for you.”

MW3 went on sale worldwide on Tuesday for PS3, 360, Wii – that particular version made by Treyarch – and PC.

That's a beast.

wow sales in the rest of the world have really grown and especially on the PS3 I assume.

What I find strange is that when Sony announces UC3 sold 3.8 million units in 1 day everyone gets emotional and in denial mode and claim its shipped and not sold blabla, while certain people/institutions knows for certain Activision sells gazillion units to gamers like us on release day. Anyone wants to explain please?

what exactly are you saying?

are you saying this is shipped? or are you saying that UC3's is sold to consumers?

this is getting very boring... anyone with an ounce of common sense knows the situation here.

I'm saying how people accept MW3 numbers as sold to consumers and question UC3 numbers and bring in the" are ze shippedzz" ... anyone with an ounce of common sense knows the situation here.

Because its good to use common sense some times. COD must likely have shipped over 20m first day, and they did say that the figure is from Charttrack.

@turkish the difference is that sony always tries to whitewash their numbers to let a lot people think they sell the same amount of games like others do with their games even if they don't. most here know the difference between mw3 and uncharted3 numbers on vgc but i think most people on this planet don't know the difference between sony's and other companies numbers.

activision saying 6.5 million means 6.5 million bought the game and play it sony means 3.8 are in the shops people could buy.

lol first of all the number is consistent with previous COD games, and the total shipped is likley around 20 million already.

Based of this the WW day one sales could be a bit overestimated, instead of 9.3 look to be like 8.7 million based on the 7 million number from the other article.

Nonetheless, First Week of 12 + million looks certain.

"sony tries to whitewash their numbers" lol amusing. why is Sony so different then others when it comes to publishing numbers? When Sony says something, people get too emotional and in denial mode.

I kind of see what you are saying but the thing here is, everyone knows that COD games are huge, I mean this is a fact if you look at their recent history, breaking records and all. So it's kind of expected for their games to continue to do well. Therefore you could say just about any number, as long as it's huge, and it will be universally accepted (mostly) as true.

At the end of the day MW3 is fucking beast  and if VGC told me it sold 10 million on the first day, I'd believe it.

I LOVE paying for Xbox Live! I also love that my love for it pisses off so many people.
