It's subscription based it was free to play because of how bad it was at the start but that ends in a month or two.

Honestly I think it's worth it. The game is free for another month and then the sub period will begin. Square actually stated that they might only make players pay about 50% of the actual sub fee for now.

The game launched with a LOT of problems. I'm one of the biggest Final Fantasy fans there is and I also couldn't stand it. However now over a year later i'm actively playing every day.

There's a lot more to do, it's a lot more fun, and a LOT less buggy.

Honestly I believe anyone who has bought the game before should retry it now because it is that much better. Also if at any time you buy FFXIV BEFORE Nov. 2012 of next year you will get the 2.0 upgrade for free and another additional 30 day free trial.

It is free to play until early December. they're planning a monthly sub with a possible discounted price. When April arrives(I think) the new version, Final fantasy XIV 2.0 will be released for free to download following another free to play for a month trial. There is talks about paying half price/discount until version 2.0 is out the door and kicking.

 

Edit: i'm playing it since the events/items and story taken place right now leading up to 2.0 is exclusive and will never happen again.

Personally i'm excited to see what's up with Dalamud and the Empire. The story is pretty good. I think they can do wonders in their first expansion.

I bought the game months ago for like... £15 and I regretted at first (lol) but the game-play got A LOT better.
Battle-system is fun now. I am leaving the game until the new expansion comes out and it actually sounds really great. Graphics are superb too.

So yes, buy it and try it. The price is practically nothing. You are also getting free 30 days trial when the new expansion comes out.  BUY IT!
