Forums - Gaming - Sony's Best Franchises Not Enough To Beat Nintendo

funny thing is that i actually see this as a good thing because instead of complacently rehashing the same thing over and over... and over again, this appears to be forcing sony to try new things in terms of games franchises

i'm fairly sure that if sony had found a comparable level of success with its games we wouldn't have seen new franchises like uncharted or little big planet or infamous etc and as a gamer i'm more interested in the variety of games that are available than the sales of the games i play but i guess its up to each individual to determine which is more important

Really? Nintendog is exciting? Mario Kart is new? Not Gonna mess with NSMB, that game was actually pretty fun :D

But like A203D said, Resistance and Uncharted are fairly new franchises and they will probably not have as many sequels as Zelda or Mario. Still, you can bet I'll be getting a Vita with uncharted and resistance. That's a winning combo. Despite sales, these two franchises are top-notch. I got over Mario right when I turned 14. Never tried Zelda, never will.

I strongly disagree with this statement. It puts to much emphasis on new. I think new franchises have a part to play in the success of any hardware but they are a much harder gamble then using existing AAA+ franchises and IP. Sony in this case lacks any IP other then Gran Turismo that can truly compete against Nintendo's major IP. No I am not just looking at Nintendo's IP that sell 5+ million copies as Rol considers major. But look at all of Nintendo's IP that regularily sell over a million copies per game. Then look at Sony's sales show that most of Sony's franchises have a hard time competing with some of Nintendo's weaker IP.

Thats a winning combo for a newer Sony fan but it is not a winning combo business wise. This combo will not be able to push as many units off the shelf as Nintendo's Mario and Zelda end of story. Resistance as a franchise is on its death bed and Sony will likely drop it soon, Uncharted while being very good at selling doesn't necessarily stand a chance on Vita. Look at how God Of War performed on PSP on PS3/PS2 it is one of the strongest IP's Sony has but when it went to handheld its highest selling title was alittle more then half the sales of the highest selling home title. But the later Ghost of Sparta title did so terrible it didn't reach a million copies sold. Uncharted is a great franchise on home platforms but there is no guarantee it will do nearly as well on handhelds.

In the end I think Nintendo and Sony do need some new and exiting types of games. But Sony needs them far more then Nintendo. Hate it all you want but their is a much larger and healthier market for these Nintendo titles (Mario/Zelda) then any of the newer IP released in this generation.

I think Sony are quite unlucky with their first party sales really, they only really hit their stride making top-end software that can really go side-to-side with Nintendo (in terms of quality, I guess) once the PS3 hit. And the PS3 hasn't really set the world alight in sales....

They really failed to establish any new IP on the PSP though... non of what they tried really broke through or anything. They really need to sort that out on the Vita... even if it's just something like Uncharted. I mean from what i can see non of their PSP games broke 4m units... and the highest were all pretty heavily bundled. That's just pathetic, I get the impession Vita software is being given a bit more of a focus though, maybe :/.

CAn't disagree wth any of that, but I'm speaking from gamer's point of view, not a bussiness man. If you want my honest opinion, Nintendo is playing it safe and it has worked . Mario and Zelda are legendary at this point and for some reason in most people's eyes, they can do no wrong...EVER. Here's the thing for me again, I grew out of Mario and Zelda was never a pleasing franchise for me. I've waited for new IP for Nintendo for so long and the only successful one of the top of my head are Nintendog and pikman (whatever it's called) and a shit ton of dance/party games. Nintendo, personally, has dissapointed me this gen.

Back 3 years ago, before I had a job, my dad offered to buy me and my siblings a Wii. We we're pretty excited. However, I thought about it and decided to put it off, cause being a huge PS2, I really wanted a PS3, but goddamn, was it expensive. A year later, I got a job, I bought a slim PS3 and I could not be happier. Had I gotten a Wii, I would be fucking pissed with myself. I think nintendo does not wanna take risk. Xenoblade, Last history and Pandora's tower (?) are amazing games, the kind of games that I want. Mature, fast paced, action oriented. Instead they decided to stick with what they know and dish out MArio and Zelda games and the Nintendo fan club pissed themselves in joy every single year more. They also went for the casual crowd, which let's be honest, it was probably the smartest decision they could have made.

Sorry if I got off track. My whole overall point is that I grew up on nintendo and I loved mario, not so much zelda. The fact is if you're not a fan of Zelda, Mario, Kirby or dancing/party games, The Wii just isn't for you. Look at MadWorld, The conduit and Real Steel. Excellent games but wii fans never even looked their way, those were sad days for the Wii. Nintendo played it save, they stick with what they know and they were successful. Sony took a lot of more risk and tried tons of new games, IPs etc and arguably, they have failed to come up with anything that sells in large quantities, we can all agree, but at the end of the day, I enjoy EVERY SINGLE ONE. Uncharted, Resistance, InFamous, LittleBigPlanet, Killzone, Dissidia, etc. All great quality games that I can safely say go tow to tow with any of Nintendo's IP terms  of quality and no amount of quotes from the Nintendo patrol squad or members of VGC with avatars of link will make me edit this.  Every single year after i got my PS3 (in '09), I have never  said" Shit, I've got no games to play" Had I bought a Wii, I would have gone insane...or at least become a good dancer. I thank Sony for the games they provided and I hope nintendo will finally bring some fresh faces into their consoles. I would not mine buying a Wii U.

Please, do not take this as an attack to Nintendo or it's fans. These are just the thought of a very disapointed Nintendo fan this gen.

Uncharted and Resistance both had three iterations in a single console generation...

Do I really need to google how many years, gens and games have Mario and Zelda gone through? :/

lol If Nintendo went Third-Party (which won't ever happen), their games would be the only games that would sell on the multi-millions mark.

What can I say? Your post doesn't leave room for any other interpretation. It is an attack on Nintendo and its fans, reasonable criticism looks differently. There are also doubts that you are a Nintendo fan.

1) Pikmin isn't hard to spell.

2) Nintendo didn't make a single dance game this generation.

3) The Last Story isn't a name that is hard to remember, especially because it is an amazing game.

4) Pandora's Tower is probably not that great, but naming it along with Xenoblade and The Last Story is a popular talking point, because Nintendo of America decided against publishing these games. Looks more like you just threw it in there, because you at least know as much as it sounding like valid criticism. Which it is, coming from the right person. But honestly, your whole post sounds more like covering up.

5) Real Steel, oh my. Okay, at this point I am inclined to believe that names just aren't your strength.

6) MadWorld, The Conduit and Red Steel were not excellent games. Excellent equals high quality, these games weren't even close to deserve this adjective.

7) Red Steel sold a million copies in a matter of months which is a feat for any new IP that releases during a console's launch period.

8) Like the trio of Japanese games, this trio of third party hardcore games is also a popular talking point. Basic stuff you can insert in posts to make them look better. Instead of Red Steel, it's usually No More Heroes though. But the important point here is that you called them "excellent" which strengthens the impression that you are covering up. You don't really care, you could easily be without Nintendo.

9) The "Nintendo patrol squad"? I prefer "Wii Gestapo".

Look, you can prefer Sony and their games, that's fine. But don't pass off this point of view as if it were coming from a former Nintendo fan. "Never tried Zelda, never will." - You would be the first Nintendo fan to say this. Not liking Zelda, okay. But being outspoken against even trying it? Something about your story isn't truthful. And finally:

10) Describing Xenoblade, The Last Story and Pandora's Tower as the games you want while pretty much everything else Nintendo makes doesn't fit your idea of what a game should be. This is the final nail in the coffin. Doesn't sound like you were a Nintendo fan to begin with.

PS: Dissidia is not a Sony game.

Oh my, you took the time to make a list for me. Oh gosh, I'm blushing now. I feel flattered.

Wonderful, how marvelously wonderful. Hahaha. I'm a nintendo fan. Plain and simple. If you think otherwise, well so be it. I got nothing to prove here
