Not Gonna mess with NSMB, that game was actually pretty fun :D But like A203D said, Resistance and Uncharted are fairly new franchises and they will probably not have as many sequels as Zelda or Mario. Still, you can bet I'll be getting a Vita with uncharted and resistance. That's a winning combo. Despite sales, these two franchises are top-notch. I got over Mario right when I turned 14. Never tried Zelda, never will. |
I strongly disagree with this statement. It puts to much emphasis on new. I think new franchises have a part to play in the success of any hardware but they are a much harder gamble then using existing AAA+ franchises and IP. Sony in this case lacks any IP other then Gran Turismo that can truly compete against Nintendo's major IP. No I am not just looking at Nintendo's IP that sell 5+ million copies as Rol considers major. But look at all of Nintendo's IP that regularily sell over a million copies per game. Then look at Sony's sales show that most of Sony's franchises have a hard time competing with some of Nintendo's weaker IP.
Thats a winning combo for a newer Sony fan but it is not a winning combo business wise. This combo will not be able to push as many units off the shelf as Nintendo's Mario and Zelda end of story. Resistance as a franchise is on its death bed and Sony will likely drop it soon, Uncharted while being very good at selling doesn't necessarily stand a chance on Vita. Look at how God Of War performed on PSP on PS3/PS2 it is one of the strongest IP's Sony has but when it went to handheld its highest selling title was alittle more then half the sales of the highest selling home title. But the later Ghost of Sparta title did so terrible it didn't reach a million copies sold. Uncharted is a great franchise on home platforms but there is no guarantee it will do nearly as well on handhelds.
In the end I think Nintendo and Sony do need some new and exiting types of games. But Sony needs them far more then Nintendo. Hate it all you want but their is a much larger and healthier market for these Nintendo titles (Mario/Zelda) then any of the newer IP released in this generation.
