Forums - Gaming - Ken Levine 'not aching for next-gen consoles', 'there's lots of juice left' Gears, Uncharted and Batman "don't look old"

CVG

BioShock creator Ken Levine says he's "not aching" for the next-generation of consoles, because current titles "don't look old to me".

Speaking to our colleagues at Access in the video interview below, the Irrational man argued there's still "a tonne of juice left" to push gameplay innovation on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

"It's clear there's still a fair bit of juice left in these machines," he said. "You look at Arkham City, Uncharted and Gears of War and you're starting to see that these games don't look old to me. They look very current.

"I was playing Batman the other day and he's flying over this huge city, the snow is landing on the wings of his cape and you can see it hitting and melting... they still retain the power to visually amaze me.

they probably won't "look old" until next gen launches and produces something that makes it look old. (We will just ignore the PC)

Check out my hype threads: Cyberpunk, and The Witcher 3!

It all depends on what you compare these games against ...

At the end of the Playstation's life, Playstation games didn't look old when compared to other Playstation games; it was only in comparison to what was being done on the Dreamcast and PC (and to a lesser extent the N64) that demonstrated how old the Playstation was, and created the need for the PS2.

With what we're seeing on the PC, and what we will (probably) soon see on next generation consoles, what is released for consoles today does look rather outdated.

Consoles are last gen. The iphone is next gen.

QFT. The next iteration of Angry Birds and Cut the rope will blow these current gen consoles out of the water.

Theres not so much difference between actual game result from high end pc and game such as Batman, Uncharted, Gears ect, so I totally agree. Technically it would be miles ahead, but practically devs are creating materials with limited budget. A benchmark isnt a game.

So where's the gameplay innovation. This generation is stagnating with sequelitis and remakitis. The games look great, but I disagree that there is a lot of juice left for gameplay innovation. All resources are used up to make them look great, restricting games to smaller and smaller gameplay areas, dumber AI and less characters on screen. A new gen will add a lot of memory and computational power to play with that will not all immediately be used up by the latest graphical touches like melting snow of batman's wings. Most innovation can be found in psn/xbla games that don't concentrate on maximizing the graphics.

Anyway the best is still to come, Ni No Kuni and The last Guardian are coming next year. And skyward sword ofcourse, even though it's technically a sequel it's the first zelda game made for this gen.

I think Ken speaks tghe truth, preach on brother!!

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

Xbox One: What are you doing Dave?

If Ken says so, it must be the truth.
