Forums - Nintendo - Just beat the Black Rabite and it felt good!

As anyone who has played Secret of Mana 2 (Seiken Densetsu 3) or pretty much anyone who is JRPG savvy knows, the Black Rabite is amongst the hardest secret bosses in any JRPG and it stands miles above the difficulty of the final boss in Secret of Mana 2 (which is already a moderate difficulty JRPG).

Since I'm replaying the game and I choose Angela for my main character, I decided to give the Black Rabite a try. I probably had what was the poorest character line-up for the fight (Angela, Carlie and Lise) which was counter-balanced by some pretty good synergy between classes (Magus for high magical damage, Vanadis for pure raw physical damage output and Necromancer for MT healing and status recovery and Black Curse to stat-down every single stat in a cast). Also, my level was at 51 which is considered frankly very low to fight the Rabite (the level recommendation for Angela's final boss is 50 minimum).

I tried to avoid using all the cheap tricks for the fight, like the instant magic cast glitch, the Antimagic item spam, etc. Also, I had no Saint Saber to boost up the damage from my characters, so I was only hitting it for 110-130 (300 for level 1 Tech) between Carlie and Angela and 220 (420 for Lise Tech 1), when the Black Rabite has 65556 HP. The boss fight is mildly easy until you hit 50% of the Rabite's health and then all hell breaks loose. He starts on a rampage of self healing spells and berserker-like damaging spells casting in which you only have a less than one second window of opportunity between casts to open up the menu ring and cast MT healing and unmooglify your characters while at the same time try to damage him enough to lower his HP to below the 45% HP treshold, at which time his barrage starts becoming more spaced and it adds the Ancient spell (which did 350 damage to my characters, even with Mind-Up status on them).

Anyway, here's a video of a typical Black Rabite fight: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYlKS3-yY3o (the guy was unlucky since the BR didn't drop the Moogle Badge for him).

So, has anyone here who has played Secret of Mana 2 ever faced and defeated the Black Rabite?

Like it was some epic boss?

But seriously, that's what got a lot of players by surprise back in the days. No one expected that a Rabite, which were pretty much the easiest monsters in the game (and almost every game) to be beefed up like this one. The developers created a very clever ruse with the Black Rabite.

I really urge everyone who thinks it's pretty harmless to try this fight out You won't be dissapointed.

Well I actually thought this thread was made by wesslewoggle or Jay520's thread.

And I thought "Just beat the Black Rabite" was a euphemism for something else

Ah I see. I'm not interested in those kind of boss fights by myself, I've already got someone to beat that Black Rabite for me

Is there any challenge in a JRPG you HAVEN'T completed?

Rockstar: Announce Bully 2 already and make gamers proud!

Kojima: Come out with Project S already!

I've yet to try a no-healing challenge on the original Secret of Mana. I'll probably attempt it after finishing the third and last scenario on SoM2 XD.

I really need to play Seiken Densetsu 3, It's surprising I haven't already considering how much I love Secret of Mana. Also, what is the game's soundtrack like? I haven't heard much about it, but Secret of Mana has arguably the best soundtrack of any game IMO.
